Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

Finally got my Antiquity, A2, 9.2k pup in. In one word.....WOW! It's just what I've been searching for in tone. It's a fairly evenly voiced, super articulate, not too boomy bottom end, warm yet chimey top end. Covers a whole lot of ground as far as music is concerned. It only becomes microphobic when you really crank the gain up. I wasn't sure what to expect with an unpotted pup, but was pleasently suprised how it handles high gain. And clean, whoa.....usually I switch to the neck for clean. But you don't have to with this pup. Awsome pickup! thankyou MJ, Justino, Seymour, Evan, everybody!!!

I'm pretty sure my pickup was the first one to get installed!
I literally walked in the house, and made a beeline for my musicroom.
My girlfriend was saying "hey, we have to unpack the luggage!!!!" I already had my guitar opened up and the soldering iron warming up! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

I've been talking about an overwound Custom 5 for months, so the curiosity was killing me! I just listened to the stock one, then quickly installed the overwound one. Taking it from 14.4 to 15.3 is exactly what it needed to bring up the mids slightly and round off the top end just slightly.

Now, it sounds like the best qualities of the C-5, CC, and JB, all in one!
I wish I had a black tremspaced one too, but now it'll cost $150. :yell:

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

You're killing me, GJ! I have a C5 comming in Friday or Monday (thanks Jumpmarine), but I might have to try out one of the overwounds.

That gives me two ideas, one for you.

Why not take a standard trem spaced C5, and send it to Duncan to get rewound to those specs? I believe that only costs 75, right?

Or, I'll probably end up trying this, I wonder how a JB/C5 hybrid would sound. The way the coils would be mismatched would probably leave it at about 15.5 or so.

I am going to have to order a couple GJ Right Wing Specials!! I wish my C5 had the smooth butter mids that CC has. That pickup sounds too f-ing good to be true! I am going to order one. How do I do that exactly? Do I need to go thru an authorized dealer?

Meow......I thought that overwound Jazz was a bridge model? I can't remember if it was covered, zebra, black, or whatever. Gime a holler about it.:)

Well I was pretty well set on my Custom bridge...so I was looking for a neck pup to go with it, hopefully one that split nicely (holy crap on the Seth!)

But I sent you a PM about the Jazz.

I'm sure you are aware that the difference between the C5 (Alnico 5) and CC (Alnico 2) is just the magnet. With that in mind, a lot cheaper and easier mod that just might do the trick -- certainly worth a try. Try one of those magnets IN BETWEEN Alnico 2 and 5.

I have a CC in my ES-355 and an Alnico 3 really did the trick. You might prefer an Alnico 4. Get some of each and experiment away...

Well I got a staggered Jazz (4.4 and 4.8) wound up to about 9.3k and a potted 4-conductor Seth that came to about 8.7k (4.2 and 4.4).

I tried them in the neck of my guitar.

Jazz was okay. Combined w/ the CUstom bridge I got some icepick highs, and I would have liked a bit more bass. I've thought about selling this one up. (here Jolly Jolly......)

Just my 2 cents but to my ear, anything over about 7.8-8.0k is a recipe for pure mud in a neck pickup.

Yeah, I've already done that with all the Customs. I've got a nickel C-4 on loan to MRID right now, and I'll have that back soon. I'm thinking that the Alnico 3 magnet is a great one for necks, but only OK for bridges.
The C-4 was my favorite out of the changed magnet Customs. I still think the overwound C-5 is the best of the bunch, but I honestly need more time with it on different amps to be able to know for sure if it's my favorite Duncan humbucker.

One problem I have is that all my humbucking guitars sound good with the Duncans they have in them. I don't want to yank anything out. Maybe I need more Les Pauls.......right Jolly? :32: :laugh2:

Alnico 3 is great for vintage, bridge or neck, but if you're talking high gain, then I would agree it's not for you and that the overwound C5 probably is what you need, especially since it sounds like you've already looked into these other options.

As for needing more Les Pauls, who doesn't? :alcoholic

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

GJ,
I'm not sure yours was the first one in... I did mine as soon as I got home too but I only live 1.5 miles from the factory
Mine is a strat bridge wound to sound like a tele - 7.5K, alinco II poles, "vintage" potting, formvar 42, and a baseplate.
FWIW, the participants got to wind the single coils so they are all scatterwound while the coils were pre-wound (to save time) in the humbuckers.
I put it in my hardtail stratclone and it does sound like a tele - brash, forward, big, assertive, bright but not ice-picky. It has attitude! It is a bit microphonic but hasn't squealed on me yet. I haven't played it out yet to see how it works live and I may try swapping some cap values, swapping pots, playing with the height, etc.
It is cool to say - "yeah, I wound that pickup." And the experience could be addictive. I came home and looked online for pickup winding machines... the prices cured my addiction.

You and me both. I was excited to hear it ASAP. I also looked at winding machines, since it would be great to learn that skill. The most affordable is the one sold at Stew Mac for $350, which would probably pay for itself after about 6 pickups you sell or keep. The problem I see is that aquiring bobbins that look as good as Duncans isn't too easy. If you can't buy them in huge quantities, the raw materials can cost you $40 per pickup. Not much room for profit there!

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

You can make a coil winder yourself. Google it. The parts are pretty simple; you can make the winder with a drill and the coil counter from a calculator. I'll see if I can find the site for you, but there should be a bunch of different sites for it.

Re: Alright, Who's Put In Their Custom UGD Pickups?

Stew Mac sells a whole humbucker kit for $27, $24 if you buy 6 or more. You can get the same coil wire for about a third of the price elsewhere, some place called MWS a cat told me about. I'm still waiting for the contact info from him.

The most costly part (other than the machine) will be blowing a bunch of coil wire learning how to do it right.
