Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

I dont't understand why it wasn't mentioned earlier...

'59 (A4) & Custom 8...

In my SG I've tried Seth Lovers with A2, A3, A4, A5; Phat Cats with almost any reasonbile magnet combo, recently I've even bought Brobucker, and...

I'm going back to '59(A4) & C8 set. It's just right for my gutiar. The only thing I would change is the neck pickup to be somewhere between the neck and bridge verision outputwise, because the neck verision is sligthly overpowered by the bridge, but on the other hand the bridge '59 tend to be slightly over the top on cleans.
This set is all about perfection in an SG, good cleans besides the neck pickup position (like in 24 fret guitar) and the Custom 8... Oh the sweet sweet Custom 8...

Seymour should definetly consider doing a short run of a matched set as "Forum Special". The magnets are in stock, winds are standard, so why not? ;)

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

I like the A4 neck A8 bridge combo. It seems to work well, especially in the middle position.

Absolutely. C8's have been praised here for years. I think it's more versatile, and better sounding, than the 3 existing production models. We've heard for years about '59N's being bassy/boomy in some guitars. An A4 is such an easy fix. It takes almost no effort or cost for Duncan to offer these two as stock pickups.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

I just did my first mag swap last night on a Screamin Demon now with a Roughcast A8. So far, very impressed with the results but that was just after i put the mag in. I will give it a few days to "settle in" so to say and then see how the tone is.

Also going to experiment with the following mag swaps in the near future

JB ceramic
JB 8
Full Shred 8
Custom 8

who here has experience with these?

With an A8, the settle-in time is minimal, a couple of days max.

OTOH, an A3 may take up to a whole month, although the average time frame lies around two weeks.

These times estimates are based on my own experience of well over a decade with mag-swapping and p'up modding.

Thanks Peter-that is great info to know. I can already tell that the Screamin Demon 8 is already starting to settle into place. I totally dig what is coming out of that pup.

I just performed an RCA8 swap on a TB-10 (Full Shred) and i can already tell some of the differences. Gives it a bit more growl, low end but still very articulate and gives it some needed mids that were basically non-existent in the pickup. Again, like you say, i will give it a little time to really settle into place.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

The Demon with alnico 8 is the near perfect articulate and punchy bridge pickup .
One thing can also be done if you still find the sound a bit thin : changing the allen ( at least the bridge coil ) for medium length fillister screws .

I actually thought about doing this to the Full Shred (bridge side coil). It would look like a Screamin Demon, but sound like a Full Shred meets Custom 5 (or 8 in this case). Maybe a pretty cool tone. now i need to find some spare fillister screws.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

An A8 Screamin Demon with Allen screws under the bass strings and hex under the treble strings is da bomb. I had one in my main Strat for the longest time.

It should be so badass with A8 ! the allen in neck side coil should keep the bass tighter than a regular custom .

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

SO that leads to the question, would the standard fillister screws (like on a JB or Custom) work in a Full Shred? I am really thinking about doing this. the one thing i do not like about the Full Shred is the sort of "clank" sound you get when chugging on the low E string. I like the tightness, but i want it like a Screamin Demon sort of tightness. IF those screws do work, i wish i had a spare parts Duncan lying around to pull the parts from.

On that note, one thing i have noticed with the Screamin Demon 8 so far is that bending on the higher strings, most notably the G string, I am not getting much sustain at all. I have the pickup at a moderate height, but the notes still die out. mag still "settling in" so to say?

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

The only way to tell is to let it set for a few days. Of course it could be that the stronger magnet is killing the sustain. Try backing it away a from the strings a tad more than you normally would.

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

I wonder what a Demon would sound like with a mag setup like an Invader?

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

has anyone tried Alnico 8 in the Jazz set, I tried a Ceramic Jazz neck and it actually sounded great

I tried the Jazz neck with A8 and it is really good , full EQ , the only thing is I had to make it half aired and replace the fillister with allen , to keep the bass clean and percussive under gain . The ceramic magnet is a bit tighter on bass strings so perhaps a ceramic jazz neck is good straight away ?

Re: Alternative Magnets for Duncan Pickups

it could be that the stronger magnet is killing the sustain.
FYI: by taking measures with a Gaussmeter at the strings level, not even the strogest Neo magnet would ever generate a magnetic field strong enough to in any way inhibit the strings from freely vibrating in a PAF-like, humbucker p'up.

This phenomenon does occur, but only on single-coils that uses strong, A5 magnets rods reading over a thousand miligauss or one Tesla.

the ceramic jazz neck is really bright tho, theres more mids response but a lot of the extra mids are like high mids, theres more presence but thank god no fizz, how bright is A8 Jazz?
