ALTERNATIVES to the EL34

Re: ALTERNATIVES to the EL34

Thanx, Rid.

I'm ordering a set of KT77s and 6CA7s today, and will compare em to the Mullard EL34s already in my amp.

Re: ALTERNATIVES to the EL34

Most of the posts I've read about these tubes vs the EL34s,has been that folks still favor the EL34s....I've wondered about this topic myself?

Thanx, Rich!

I was doing some reading, and it looks like some people prefer the 6CA7 for it's clarity, but I'm not exactly looking for a clean tone. ;)

I'm kind of fond of the 6CA7"s AND the EL34's. I like the 6CA7's more when I need a big bottom, but the 34's just scream RAWK. :6:

BTW, EH's 6CA7's are pretty darned good, if you ask me.

Re: ALTERNATIVES to the EL34

Okay, I ordered a set of 6CA7s and KT77s ... I love being 'in the biz', got a really great price on em!

I think that I won't be able to do any experimenting until after LGS, though.

Re: ALTERNATIVES to the EL34

I ordered some KT-77's myself - should be here Saturday. I understand they need to burn-in for about 5 hours though before they really start to shine. Maybe some people didn't give them enough time. Can I just leave the amp on for a few hours or do they need to be played through?

i do beleive you need to be pushing volume through them, though, I may be mistaken.

T.O., have you spoke with Scott Splawn? Heard he tried them and liked 'em, just liked the mullards better. Are you still using the Splawn?

Yes, you need to have signal passing thru the amp, otherwise you're just activating the heaters, and not really using the valves. I usually put a CD player thru the amp, and set my Hot Plate at 'Load' and let the amp play for a day or two.

Yes on both questions - I've talk to Scott about em and I still use the Quick Rod. (You will have to pry it from my cold, dead hands!!)

When I first heard the Mullards, I thought them to be a little too soft. I ended up mixing them with a pair of EH EL34s to add more grit and bite.

Re: ALTERNATIVES to the EL34

I just ordered a matched quad of KT77 from Eurotubes. Someone on JP forum posted recordings that show the difference between EL34 and KT77 in clean and distortion on Mesa Mark III. The KT77 sounds smoother and richer, and the EL34 sounds harsher (in a good way). I can understand why some people would still prefer EL34.

I guess, I'll just mix my EL34L and KT77 in stereo then. :fingersx: :smokin:
