Im running a blues jr and it has the possibility of highish gain, but its no 5150. I have a SFX-03 in front of it, and that does the trick quite nicely and the tube screamer should smooth out the distortion for you. Definately recommend adding an extension cab or somethinf to help with the bass response. Gotta admit it may not be the best metal amp, but it still sounds nice at relatively low volumes and that sees to make everyone happier.

I love the 81, but have considered on a couple occations just taking out the PA2. I do like using it for a little solo boost sometimes though, so it's not all bad. Definitely not something to just leave on all the time (if you have an 81) but I think it was a worth-while purchase.
sublimerules: thanks for the insight bro! I do have a Mesa/Boogie cabinet that I will prolly always have, so i've got the extension whenever I want it.

Dude i've tested blues jr.s in stores with guitars armed with EMG81's....you MIGHT need a pedal to boost it into STRAIGHT EDGE territory but for stoners like me that's metal bro. Crank that little sucker and start thrashin.

I don't think it's a bad idea but make sure to get it from a place that will let you return it before you get rid of the BV.
Hook it up to your cab, try some pedals, do everything you would normaly do. If it works out, you would be stupid not to just go ahead with the blues JR.

No, you aren't crazy...I use a Junior, Strat, Bad Monkey, Crunchbox and a De-7 for my small room rig and I get compliments on my tone all the time. I played last Friday night with a sit in guitarist (he was using a 335 through a CyberTwin)
and he was asking how to get a tone like mine......made my day.
