Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

I think the main thing is to focus on a completely original look, like Seigmund amps.

I still think the amps should look like rustic, antiquated stained wood, with a Celtic knot branded or stenciled onto the wood front panel. A screened Celtic knot on the oxblood cloth for all cabinetry. Use a copper chassis front with cream chickenhead knobs.
The name, Celtic, and the model name should only be annodized on the chassis front.

Make all the amps like that, so it becomes easily recognizeable. Instead of catering to people, create one look as a trademark like Marshall did, then stick with it.
It'll have more collectibility appeal when the look is constant. Just my opinion.

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

I think if you're building amps that are a little different, then you should go for a look that's different. Stand out from the crowd and say "these are my amps, and they are great, tell the world!". I'll have a yellow and black striped fur 1 to go with my surname!!

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

Okay, soon I'll have a traditional black tolex "matchless" looking head and I've also ordered an unfinished poplar 1x12 with oxblood cloth and cream piping. This particular cab maker doesn't fingerjoint, he dovetails. (even prettier to look at).

His work is exceptional in every way. I will be picking the stain myself once I decide on the color of the face and back plates. Thanks to several of you for some great ideas.

It was recently brought to my attention that a rather famous amp maker tried the Irish theme on his amps and the entire "green" thing failed miserably. I will stain in green if I get an order for it, but I'm leaning towards somethign in the brownish, reddish stain region. If I go with a copper faceplate (thanks for the idea Joe), the stain will be more to the brownish amber end of the spectrum. If I end up with a maroon/dark dark red faceplate, the stain will have a bit more red in it.

Either way, I've got a line on some beautiful brown stitched leather handles, actually have one on my tweed amp, and they are gorgeous and filll your hand up and just yell quality when you touch them.

I'm also going to order some speakers to try, ebaying what I don't end up keeping.

Red Fang, Greenback, G12H30, Private Jack to start with. 3 out of 4 of these are already known to my ears, the private jack is not. I really, really want to stay with american speakers if I can. I'm trying to avoid anything made in China at this point, so unless the Greenback (G12M30) and the G12H30 are cleaar cut winners, I'll stick to something Eminence. once I decide on which one I like the best, I'll give Weber the specs and order one or two of his to try. Weber's speakers are harder for me to choose from since he has so many minute options for each. I've found with Ted that if I give him a starting point, he can come up with a killer version. But he's got to have some point of reference.

Well enough of that now. When I come home from my trip there should be a bonanza of parts waiting for me. Rodney Gene has a studio in Austin. I just need to find a killer guitar player that is willing to meet me there for some sound clips. (Stratman & Jeff come to mind, but Austin is a long drive for them.... I also have this vision of a clanging cowbell in my head.... Sid, you up for some clip recordings? :) )

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

Yep. Just put my deposit down on the 1x12. Jeff Swanson is doing this first combo.
Dovetails.jpg
www.swansoncabinets.com So far, he's been a pro to work with.

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

WoW!!! his stuff does look top notch man!!! i think you picked a winner!?

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

Swanson makes GREAT cabs Scott....good choice!!! (BUT he's kinda' pricey...he giving you a bulk discount???).

Also, if the Greenback or G12H30 seems to work out but you're concerned with getting a Chinese product, try the MOJO British Vintage BV12M25(Greenback) or the BV12H30...I use them & the V-30 version...all are great speakers & they're Made in the US of A !!!!

Lew's brother Bruce (I think you're familiar with him! :13: ) hooked me up with them. I think he had a hand in designing them or something like that.

come to think of it, I remember Bruce talking about these. I just ordered one of each. We'll see how good they are!

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

I'd definitely like to hear what you think...

I have a closed back 2x12 with the BV12M25/BV12H30 & an open back 2x12 with the BV12V30/BV12H30 in them........I like them both ALOT!

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

Dark red embossed leather with black and gold grill cloth, plated knobs, and black for everything else.

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

when i order my celtic combo, it is going to have to be able to take a licking ... it would kill me to buy something 'pretty' (like furniture) only to have it dinged while loading in/out at bars, etc ... i like em plain and simple .. this tends to keep the cost down too, which makes the whole prospect more appealing in the nearer (as opposed to the further) future

i say black tolex / salt-n-pepper grille

and tons of tonal mojo inside :D

I voted for the classic Combo... Salt/Pepper Grill.
I've always liked the combo. Although with all the hubbub about head/Cab greatness, maybe i should convert my Mark IV and go that route. But then again I am happy with my current rig..It does what I need it to do. With the possible exception of being just too loud for most situations.
Or perhaps I'm just too wishy washy.

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

Old thread, for sure. :)

LD23, if your combo sounds great, don't mess with it. The only real advantages on the head versus combo thing is that if you amp is prone to rattles, then going with a head/cab version is nice. Or if you're getting older and you don''t want to truck a 70 lb. combo in, you can bring them in seperately. Now that I've had my shoulder surgery, I'm a big fan of head/cab if you want more than one speaker. For one speaker only, I'd always go combo.

I don't like wood amps. it just doesn't say rock and roll to me.
:laugh2:

All rock n roll amp's Head Cabs and Combos are made from wood! :laugh2:

Hey Scott. If i was to order an Amp from you in the next year or so would it be possible for you to build it with an Input Tranny that will handle 220V 50hz ? (e.g. for most of Europe)?

Re: Amp Advice Stocking Needed...

I've resisted going 220v so far. I could probably buy a Variac that could handle it I guess. It's not currently in the lineup. Shipping overseas presents another layer of complexity as well.
