Amp back

I have a marshall avt20 with a closed back cab. I was wondering if it would make any difference if I were to remove the peice of wood, or cut a portion of it off and turn it into a semi closed cab. Or maybe I should just by a head and be done with it.:scratchch

Re: Amp back

It will change the way your amp sounds and projects.
What do you wish to accomplish by doing so?

On some amps, the back is easy to remove by taking out a few screws. I would try that just to see, but I wouldn't go hacking at it with a saw. {MOST} amps are made with an open or closed back to optimize the sound. Its could change your tone for the worse, so make sure its reversible!

Re: Amp back

Just like Mr. B says...

Cabs are constructed to be what they are. Size, speaker, material, joins, design and baffle all contribute to what the cab does. It's not as simple as a box with a couple of holes in it. Taking off the back is the easiest way to check that out.

I would strongly recommend against cutting the back- if you're really into the idea of making a semi-open cab, get another chunk of wood.

Re: Amp back

I am simply very bored with the tone of this amp, and not really happy with it at all. I think its time for me to upgrade to a head of some sort.

Thanks for your replys it seems like the best thing for me to do would be to cut my losses and spring for something Ill be really happy and inspired with for a good long while.:friday:
