Re: Amp choice for the poor

I don't think this is a gear problem....

I think this is a drummer/other guitar player being WAY too loud problem.

If 60 watts isn't doing it and you're NOT playing an outdoor festival without monitors or a decet PA then the amp has a serious problem or it's a human issue.

Seriously...level with us....soneone in the band's a little loud....isn't he?

Definitely get the BV checked out, if 60w tube isn't loud enough for you, get a hearing aid :saeek:

Agreed!

I'm pretty sure 60 watts tube is gonna be louder than 100 digital in the first place.

I play a 100 watt digital amp, and I run it at 5 then mic it for gigs. That way I can hear myself easily on stage and the PA does the rest. If you can't hear yourself on full whack, there might be something wrong with your amp..

Re: Amp choice for the poor

Just a thought - is your amp a 1x12?

I've never liked 1x12's in a metal environment if we're talking rhythm... They always seem thin.

Re: Amp choice for the poor

Other guitars aren't the problem, no drummer, well real drummer at least. I am however running it through the 1/12 speaker in it. Lets put it this way, the gig we just played was MAYBE 200 ft long and 25, 50 feet wide. The audience was right in front of us and they always tell us we need to play louder! How can this be?? My other guitarist has a H and K 120 watt amp he only has at 6 live, hybrid amp. I'm going to get the tubes checked out as something is obviously wrong, friday at our next gig I am going to run it through my 4/12 cab and see it that helps projection of sound for now. Now!! I have NEVER had to mess with tubes so I need serious help. How much is it gonna cost to get it checked out and then how much to get the tubes repaced? It's a rebiased BV that had 6l6's in it but uses EL34's instead now. What tubes are best for this sound.....I like a lot of gain but it needs to be very defined and clear, a ton of sustain wanted, can take a lot of use, saturates plenty. Help me out guys, im very new to this!

Re: Amp choice for the poor

The 4x12 is going to give you a lot more volume. The 1x12 speaker may not be enough to cut it. I'd try it with a 4x12 cab first (try to get one with Celestion speakers or equivalent) and I bet that will fix 50% if not all your sound problems. If it is tubes, I'd recommend SED (formerly Svetlana. Svetlana is now a different company) EL34 tubes. I'm not exactly sure how much it's going to cost to get it rebiased and to get your amp checked out. I'm sure the others here know though.

Is your other guitarist playing through a 4x12? I still think 60 watts is more than enough, but if theres a lot of people and the place is heavily carpeted, the 1x12 speaker can get drowned out. If the 1x12 speaker is "weak", it will fart out and actually not be able to push out enough volume if you go past a certain volume level. The speaker itself may not be able to handle the amount of power being pumped into it.

In highschool, my band played in a talent show. There was 3 bands performing and we all seemed to be using peavey amps as well as a peavey PA LOL. Anyways, my 60watt peavey transtube solid state 1x12 amp was enough to cut through an auditorium meant to house about 400-600 people. The thing is, I had to set the amp at 6, because at 8, the speaker couldn't handle it and farted out.

The other guitarist was also using a peavey bandit solid state amp and he had no problems being heard.
