amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

I have a question for everyone. I am using a Peavey Bandit "silver strip" amp with a new Eminence CV-75 speaker which is already British voiced. I am looking for the best eq and amp settings in general on gain channel only to capture that Slash kinda sound so basically a Marshall kinda tone. I use a OD pedal with a 12au7/12ax7 tube in it. My settings are Pre gain 6 with clean boost OD on it.
BASS-71/2 to 8
MIDS-7
Treb- 5
with Resonance to loose Presence is on 7
Can you peeps let me know if this is simiular to what yours is like and does anybody know if I am close to that tone I am looking for. Speaking to the Slash fans of course lol. thanks

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

Well depending on the era and amp he used there's different settings. I've seen one interview where he said everything, EQ Gain and Presence were set at 6. In another he was running Bass 8, Mid 4.5, Treble 7, and Presence 6-7

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

so with my settings Im kinda close to the second set you said except for I use more mids and less treb. thats cool. I figured with my presence up to 7 I can back off the treb a bit. Yeah during appeitite he was running alittle darker sound lower mids etc.. But I like his sound better now with Myles he seemed to have uped the mids more IMO.

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

A Marshall style amp has the EQ in front of most of the clipping stages. The more gain there is the less effective the EQ controls are to actually EQ the output. They are more fine-tuning the distortion but have only a minor impact on frequency distribution.

You might make quicker progress by doing a frequency distribution chart of what you got, and try to find a Slash clip with no other instruments to compare. Then use a plain after-amp EQ on the output to see how close that gets.

You won't use that on stage in a club, but it will give you a lot of knowledge that you use to then gain (hehe) control.

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

Your ears are the best judge. As none of us are Slash and will have our own tone, the tweaks we would need to get to AFD tone will all be a bit different. We also might hear different aspects, play on different rigs and use different pickups/guitars. Find some isolated tracks as suggested as see how they sound by comparison to what you get.

Sorry dude but this is just plain 100% incorrect. In most master volume marshalls the gain stage is V1a into V1b with V2a being the tone network. I dont know of any of the tube marshalls that the gain stages are after the tone controls.

Now Mesa Mark series on the other hand DO actually have the tone controls before the gain stages which is why the treble control effects the amount of gain so much.

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

To the OP being your rig is almost 100% different from Slash's what settings his knobs are on are largely irrelevant. Dialing the knobs on a Peavey bandit wont give the same results as a modded all tube marshall.

Your best bet will be to do it by ear. His tone is pretty bright and brash so dont be afraid of treble and pulling back the bass

I would if I sell my kidney for it first lol

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

I think I actually got it pretty close and it sounds awesome!!! I am using a semi hollow DOT with an Alicno II pro in the bridge with a Alnico pro II "Slash" in the neck. I have my amp gain on 6/with my tube overdrive pedal to a clean boost.
Lows are at 6-7 with Resonance loose Mids- 7 treb- 4-5 with Presence at 7 tube dynamics all the way down to 10% best tuby like sound. This seems to have me in the right ballpark loving the tone.

Hmmm. Oops. Sorry about that. That's what I get for posting from memory.

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

Do what I do - try to cop the tone recorded, fail miserably, post it on here, have it ripped to shreds as you feel shame and regret, but then take the advice and use it because it's often correct.

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

getting the tone is easy.
you are just using the wrong gear to do it with.

for example...you would not bother asking how to get the jimi hendrix sound with a jackson soloist and an EVH5150 amp. No matter how much you tweak the knobs, it just isnt going to happen. You are not going to get a black sabbath tone with a strat and a twin reverb either.

If you want the same sound, use the same (or at least similar) gear.

Maybe not with a twin reverb, but strat was used on Black Sabbath's early singles and partly on Black Sabbath album.

Slash uses the woman tone trick. Neck pickup with the tone knob rolled back a bit.

Re: amp EQ settings for that Slash Marshall sound

I've played through his studio rig and I have to say, it had WAY more treble than I expected. Also, a little secret, when he tracks, his amp is cranking at stage volume and he's standing right in front of it.
