Amp Noise?

Hey guys, I need help. I just got a JTM 45 clone amp that was modded to JCM 800 specs.

The problem:

There is a ton of hiss coming from the amp.... the big problem is that the noise is present even when nothing is plugged into the input. I switched guitars, and checked to see if it was the guitar cable- it's not... checked the cable from the head to the cab - it's not the problem....

Any ideas or thoughts as to what the problem could be :reporter: ?

Re: Amp Noise?

Lots of things:

  • Poor lead dress
  • carbon comp resistors
  • failing preamp tubes
  • bad joint somewhere
  • bad ground connection

etc etc, the list is endless. The most likely thing I'd say is that the mod to JCM800 spec wasn't performed that professionally, might be worth taking it to a tech to sort it out if necessary.

Re: Amp Noise?

oddly your clone must sound like my real 800 head... my 800 also has a huge amount of hiss and hum with no guitar cord plugged into the front of the amp.... with the standby on, there is lots of hum coming from the amp... turning the gain controll up or down also causes the hum to get louder or go away....

I got to get that head to a tech!!!!
