Amp Setting for 59'S

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

Turn everything up to 10, then turn down what you don't like!

Excellent idea. Most amps have passive controls, so the EQ knobs set on 10 is the guitar's real sound. Dial down any that you feel are excessive. Most guys think the knobs add treble, mids, or bass; all they can do is reduce it.

i understand what you are getting at, but this is overly simplistic, overgeneralized, and incomplete ... there are amps with highly intertwined EQ sections where the knee of the curve moves ... and there are amps with active EQ that do boost in addition to cut ... and there are amps with parametric eq that both move, boost, and cut ...

a blues junior with the B/M/T on 10 would make a hellacioulsy sucky tone

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

That is why it helps to follow the old blues man method when using Fender amps. Mid and Treble full tilt, Bass on 1, Reverb and Volume to taste.

Ouch. Too much high end. Painful on the ears. I leave the venue or change the station when they overdo treble like that, especially if they're playing Fenders. Gotta have some low end too. The blues guys I like to listen to have fuller, warmer tones. As Johnny Winter once explained, the reason old guys used a top heavy EQ was to get a bit of distortion from the treble overdose, which was back in the days when amps were getting more powerful but didn't have master volume (gain) controls, and pedals were still in their infancy. That was the only way they could do it at the time.

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

Guitar Doc, you are so wrong, its easy setting a tone in a house, but its completely different on stage as you should know.

Actually, I am so right. As you can see from a lack of consensis of responding forum members, each has their own way of doing things. Each has their own set of ears...likes, dislikes, preferences, tastes.

You are absolutely correct that stage settings are different from bedroom settings.

Again, the answer is the same...experimentation and experience. Unfortunately, a failure or two is also included in the equation. There aren't any real shortcuts to finding your tone.

Exactly. My Crate VC60's lead circuit is similar to a JCM800 and "all on 10" is absolute awesomeness. I occasionally dial down the mids and presence since I started using an A8-powered hybrid, but a good "Marshall" type circuit always sounds better on 10 if your guitar/pickup combo works together. The clean circuit however, is a little different. I have to keep the bass low or it's boomy.

When I ran a '59 in my guitar, I found the active mid-boost circuit helped punch the rock tones up. However, I never was put off by any "scoop" in the tone. I think the '59 is about as perfect a Strat bridge pickup as you can get for an HSS type of thing.

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

6/3/8 lol!

As I said, it works great in an HSS guitar where you want there to be some match of tonality and a nice progression between the 'bucker and the singles. Fender tends to put stupidly hot and midrange-y pickups in the bridge that contrast too wildly with the singles that are generally in a Strat. I loved the '59's mix with the stock pickups in my old HSS Strat. Alder also emphasizes the upper mids the 59 does have nicely.

Besides, some of those EQ numbers are nominal and don't always reflect what you hear in your guitar through your amp. I personally consider the bridge model more 7/5/8 to my ear.

Heck yeah, I love the 59' in my DK2T alder body. 6/3/8 is the eq SD says the 59' is at.

...I thought it was funny.

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

Here is where it helps to have a Pro Junior:

Too dark? Turn the tone up. Too bright? Turn the tone down.

Mostly right on 6 works for everthing....

And some amps with tone on 10 will actual distort. Not a problem if dimed marshall tone is your goal...but for anything else, not so much.

As always - no getting away from using your ears.

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

I use my ears to hold my hair back.

Oh, wait a minute!

I lost most of my hair years ago.

Maybe I use my ears to hold my head on.

Wait.

Maybe I DON'T use my ears.

Oh well! Just play your damn guitar.
