amp settings

Re: amp settings

I don't think any pro nusician who GIGs regularly uses the same settings in every room. Years ago I used to play in this one room that had a metal ceiling. If I used the same sttings in that place as I did in the sudio the treble would have been so high I would have broke all the windows!

Your EQ needs to be adjusted to the enviornment in which you will be playing. Then once the room fills up with people you will have to adjust it again!:argh:

It would be so easy if you could just set it and leave it, unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

I also find that depending on where I am standing in comparison to the amp.... I may adjust it some more!

i think most of my amps sound best a certain way with certain guitars and deviating from that too much is something that i try not do. that said, you are correct that the size and type of the gig can require different things. i use different amps for different gigs from 10w to 40w. i usually bring two amps, one that i know is small enough and one thats a little louder incase i need the extra umph

Re: amp settings

On my krank:

Presence:2-3
Sweep: 4-5
Bass: 5
Mids: 3-4
Treble: 5
Gain: 5

Really depends what cab I'm using with it though.

+1.

Carpet, hardwood, and tile all affect the sound you're hearing from an amp in a room. What sounds nice and crunchy in the room with the carpeted floor often sounds significantly brighter anywhere else in my experience, almost so much that I need to back the treble off a bit. But...

Personally, I never touch my settings once I set them where I like them. Like Bludave said, the sound changes a lot depending on where you're standing, so what I do if I make some setting changes is move around a bit as I'm playing something so I get the best idea of what it sounds like. Even if I go to a gig, I don't touch my knobs because most of the time the amp gets mic'd up. Yes the mic'd sound will be different from what you hear in a room but it always sounds great coming through the monitors, at least to me, and that's what matters.

Oh right, settings :D. On my XXX, the EQ knobs on the gain channels are active so for all intensive purposes I'll double the values.
Clean: Bass 6 / Mids 5 / Treble 5
Crunch: Bass 6 / Mids 3.5 / Treble 7 / Gain 4.5 / Volume 10
I don't pay attention to the Ultra channel that much because I barely use it. Settings are pretty much the same as the crunch but with less gain and volume.

Re: amp settings

It's really up to your ears and guitar. I tend to not like a lot of highs so all 5's on a Fender Stagemaster 1000, I play my strat with both tone knobs at 5. However, with my Twin Reverb, it was like 3/3/5 b/m/t.

Sometimes, however, if I'm trying out gear, all knobs are at 10 (tone and volume knobs on guitar) and 5's (amp EQ). If it's usable enough, I'm interested (because I want enough range of use out of EQ). To me, if I have to run treble at 1 or tone at 1 to get decent use, forget it: I need versatility (the ability to add OR remove treble, not have to remove all the treble to get decent tone).

But in my opinion, again, this is all based on your gear and your ears. You can check out (if you're curious) the Audio Samples page as to what they used for those....

Re: amp settings

Depending on where I'm playing, as Dave said, I adjust. However, as a rule I start with:

Treble: maybe 6 or 7 (not a fan of too much treble)
Middle: full up at 10
Bass: either 9 or 10

If the amp has a Presence knob, I put it at about 5 or 6.

Volume: max'd and then I work the volume from the guitar.

Re: amp settings

I really am all over the place depending upon the guitar I use. 2 teles/1 strat. Maybe even more than the guitars is my mood. Last night I wanted nothing to do with gain and crunch so the preamp was down around 7, master at 9.
My eq is as follows with my strat and TMB
T-7
M-5
B-4
P-4
