Amp Shopping

I was out of town yesterday and had a moment to drop by a mom and pop music store to hopefully buy me some elixir or D’Addario EXP 10-52 strings. Seems nobody carries The D’Addarios for electrics and I rarely see Elixir’s in any guage above 10-46. Short story short, while I was perusing the usuall string inventory (i.e. no strings for me) I saw this guy trying out an LTD guitar. His playing needed a lot of work as do most peoples, myself included, but he was doing well enough to get a sample of the tone coming from the amp which I couldn’t see. I was really digging the tone, so I ventured over to see what the amp was. On initial inspection, it appreared he was playing through a Kustom combo in 212 format, which I at least thought would account for the nice full sound. I still coulnd see the front of the amps and almost left it at that, but decided to disturb the guy and poked my head around and followed the cord to the actual amp.

To my surprise, the amp was a 15 watt version of the Peavey Vypyr. It had a nice saturated high gain tone going with some nice mid-range grind. Im really wanting to get myself a good practice amp in the somewhat near future as the only actual amp I have is a Kustom solid state that really sounds crappy. Unfortunately, im the kinda player that has to dig what im hearing or im just not into it as much and effectively play like ****.

Right now, my amp rig consists of a Line6 Guitar Port, a laptop and a set of headphones. A friend and I have some plans to hit the C-Bus GC and Sam Ash in the next couple weeks and make a day of it. My plan is to demo everything I can ranging from the $150 practice jobs to the higher end tube amps, just to get a feel what my money gets me at various price points and then decide what sacrifices I need to make if any to get what I need. My early initial thoughts are A Peavey 6505(+) or Blackstar HT-5 – HT-20, but my first experience hearing the Vypyr in live action has me intrigued, so I’ll also look at the usual Peavey Vypyr, Vox Valvtronics, Line 6 Spider and Roland cube options.

I guess my main question revolves around the Peavey Vypyr and the USB equipped options. How good is recording using the USB and can you go bare bones just using the amp and a DAW, or is it best with cab simms etc.?
The Blackstar’s have a cab simulated out. How do those sound? What more would you need besides the amp and a USB interface not counting any effects?

Anyway, sigh, I had to order me a set of the D’Addario EXP strings from MF. Free shipping though. I’ll now find out how they compare to Elixir’s which im pretty impressed with.

Re: Amp Shopping

Well, me and a friend of mine spent the day Saturday between our area Guitar Center and Sam Ash. I guess the big surprise from the experience is I didn’t come away with the burning desire to spend any money or at least any money I can afford to spend at this time.

Some observations:

Guitar Center- Ugh. I’ve come to the conclusion that I just plain don’t like the place too much overall. I couldn’t find a single guitar save a 3k gibby les paul that the salesman pulled out to show me the comfort heel joint that didn’t have strings on them that had more string than rust. I literally broke at least 2 High E strings trying to get a couple guitars in tune to demo some amps.

The guy that pulled out a 3k gibby did so because I asked if they had any Michael Kelley Patriots in stock to look at and I mentioned I liked the way they eliminated the heel joint you get on your typical les paul type guitars. He said they have never had the MK’s in as new stock but get them in on occasion as used which is disappointing cause I really wanted to see one. The sales guy was a decent sort and seemed to know his inventory well enough.

Besides the rusty strings, the main peeve was their guitar cords or lack thereof. They basically have 1 cord for every station and they have them zip tied to the nearest available place thereby discouraging theft I guess. This kinda stinks if you are looking at amps in an area with no cords or someone is already plugged into an amp in that area. I finally gave up looking and asked for one.

Sam Ash- Every guitar I looked at had adequate strings and oddly enough an employee handed me a guitar cord about 30 seconds after I walked in the door.

Guitars:

I wasn’t all that interested in guitars outside of finding something suitable to play and the MK Patriot, but I looked at various les pauls of the epiphone and gibby variety, some schecters, LTD’s and oddly enough the best playing guitar was a PRS SE at Sam Ash.

Amps:

Blackstar HT-5 combo – That’s what I made the trip for. They didn’t have any at GC but Sam Ash had one and overall it’s a really nice amp. It does decent gain at low volumes but could use an OD to help it out a bit. Solid tone though. The ISF knob really does change the tonal characteristics quite a bit. Worth 400 bucks.

Bugera 333XL – Wasn’t impressed. I didn’t care for the tone at all.

Vox Night Train – They are extremely heavy amps for the small size. Nice tone but could definitely use some OD pedal help.

Egnater Rebel 30 combo – One of the better amps tone wise with the ability to take it down to 1 watt. Ditto on the OD pedal.

Peavey 6505+ combo - The #2 amp of the day. A lot of amp for 600 bucks. Even at low volume there is no need for an OD pedal.

Vox, Line 6, Roland, Peavey Modelers- I tried the 50-watt version of the vox valvtronix series and it was easily the winner of the bunch, plus they are built like tanks. The peavey sounded alright, but the quality looks overall cheap and the layout isn’t the most user friendly. The Roland was meh, the line 6 spider IV was decent but I didn’t look at it for very long.

Orange Rocker 30 – Don’t know what the amp sounds like. I looked at the control panel and saw symbols instead of worded knob labels. If I wanted to play prince, id go to wal-mart and buy a CD.

Marshall jvm210h – There wasn’t really a competition. It was so much better than anything else. 2 channels, 6 modes and a really creamy mid range grind with wonderful crunch and clarity even at high gain and still sounded really good at low volume. To be fair, its also in a completely different price bracket than anything else I looked at.

Re: Amp Shopping

Its going to hopefully be a little while before I buy anything. Im still in a feeling out process and id really like to not buy something again for awile after its all said and done.

Fortunatley, I dont need anything other than a practice amp, but ill probably check out several other places and try to see a wider range of stuff because once I buy something, theres no point in looking anymore and thats most of the fun.

But to answer your question, if I was set on buying something last saturday, It probably would have been the blackstar, but the vox valvtronix would be close in the running. The vox was only about 20 bucks cheaper in the 50 watt version.
