Ampeg amps?

specifically the reverbrocket. I was wondering if there is a way to get a good medium gain out of this. Maybe daisy chaining the guitar with the accordian input? I hope i'm using he right term here. :laugh2:

Anyway, I really liked the one I played but it needs a bit more oomph at lower levels. I can turn it up a bit more now but I don't want to ruin my ears.....wait....I have ear plugs :smack:

All that aside, the question remains the same.

Re: Ampeg amps?

The accordian input is your high gain, you gotta open it up to get to the goods. Although a Duncan pu booster would help when playing at lower levels. Cool amp!!

Re: Ampeg amps?

these amps are best for medium gain tones (and great cleans), i think. That said, theres no easy way about getting that, just gotta turn it up.

Re: Ampeg amps?

I got ya.

There was one at the local shop for 500 or 400 and I really liked, I must say.

They usually don't let people turn amps up loud enough. It sounded great clean.

The accordian is the higher gain? You don't say.....

thats not a bad price, its a vintage one, right? All those old Ampegs are cool. I've longed for the super rare Ampeg Super Echo Twin, but i've never been able to find one, and if one ever does show up, the prices are getting high for those things. I love old Ampeg reverb (or "Echo"), prefer it to Fender reverb actually.

Yeah, they usually have good prices on their stuff. I think I might go with an Ampeg before I start this project. I liked it that much. I'd need try another one again and I'd need to turn it up a bit.

Re: Ampeg amps?

Came very close to buying an old Ampeg Gemini about a year ago. I thought it was a great amp, but the size was really impractical and between the two day period I put it on hold and came back to try it out with my guitar, the tremolo broke. I've heard some other reliability issues, so take that as you will. All the same, they do have really good cleans.

Re: Ampeg amps?

I used to be in a trio with a guitar player who used a V-4(?). He sounded great through it, but I didn't think it had enough gain. Listening to the stuff we recorded, it was a great sounding amp. It was heavier than all git out though...

Re: Ampeg amps?

You didn't mention if it's an original or reissue.

I have a reissue (the older EL34 reissue) Reverberocket in my stable and it's a great amp for the money. The reissues have two channels. Both sound excellent although the medium overdrive of the clean channel when it's cranked is absolutely lovely. The thing takes pedals great too. I own a few boutique amps and my Reverberocket still gets use. I know of a few studios that keep them around for recording purposes.

Keep in mind I've had mine in the shop twice in the ten years I've owned it. The repairs cost me about a hundred bucks.

Re: Ampeg amps?

I was tryin out guitars at the shop when some guy brought a reverbrocket in, i had been looking at buying that amp but he beat me to it, anyway he tried almost every tube in the shop untill he found the one he liked, it was very good sounding. Good levels of gain at higher volumes and a sweet clean tone at lower volumes. I'm not sure what tubes he put in but I would definately buy that amp.

Re: Ampeg amps?

Ampegs are great amps--if that is the sound you want. All the early stuff was designed by a jazz player for jazz players although they can get a pretty cool mild overdrive. The size of the Gemini series is a little misleading---the Gemini 1 is a staggering 15-20 cathode-biased watts into a single 12" and nearly the size of a Twin Reverb. They sorta got overlooked in the vintage craze since 7591's and some of the other tubes were pretty much unavailable until the late 90's. If I want some grit out of my Gemini, I patch the channels or goose the front end with a clean boost---sounds pretty good. With the later 60's/70's Ampegs (VT40, VT22, V4, etc) you will have a hard time overdriving them unless you play at insane levels...

Re: Ampeg amps?

Them V4s and V22s are loud as all hell and sound absolutely great when pushed with a good OD pedal, Josh Homme has used ampeg for years, since the Kyuss days, they are still the main part of his rig today in QOTSA.
