Ampeg Jet/Reverb Rocket?

hey fellas......i was just out to Guitar Center to do some amp shopping, and i played through a Ampeg Super Jet, which i think it just a reissue of their 60s Jet model?.....anyways, it sounded really cool, i like the clean tone of it, and it became overdriven really nicely

the thing is, it was a really small amp (for a 1x12 combo), and its listed at 50 watts......but i dont feel like it had quite enough volume for me, someone who plays in a full band........i'd like some extra volume

so, i noticed that Ampeg has Reverb Rocket amps, which are 2x12, and i think they would probably give me some extra push and volume that i'm looking for?

anybody have any experience/insight on these Ampeg amps? i played a weird 1x15 Ampeg Gemini as well, that was vintage and really in bad shape, but the tone was so unique and cool

Yeah the 2-12 Revererockets are probably the best amp for the money, since they sound equal to most good Fenders, and depreciated quite a bit. You can score those for a lot less than equivalent Fenders.....like $425. I think those were real sleeper amps, since they have a nice reverb, and the breakup is sweet. I'd probably opt for the 2-12, if I were you.

yes, i thought it compared very well to most fenders i played.....but it had a distinct smooth sound, and hollow sound......and the reverb was different, and actually *better* in my opinion

i could probably snag one of these and throw in some better speakers, no? think that might help with some more volume?

A friend owns an el34 50w Reverberocket 1x12 and a 60's era low wattage reverberocket (similar to the jet reissues).

Both are great amps, though as you may expect, the vintage amp is that bit sweeter. To my ear the modern reverberockets sounds fendery, but with quite a distinct treble bite to them. In some ways, they remind me of a blues junior on steroids. It's a cool sound.

Great amps. I have a 65 Hilgen which is very much an Ampeg in guts, tubes and trannies ( much the same same as the Gemini I believe). Real nice crunch that cleans up fast. I really like RI line of these amps and would say they are worth snatching up. The values on the vintage ones are really making a jump so now would be a good time to jump on one. Never played a Jet I didn't want to take home.

I have the 50 watt 1x12 Jet RI. The nice thing about these amps is they can take EL34s or 6L6's (just be sure to have the amp rebiased by a professional.)

As far as the volume, what kind of band are you in? Im in a garage rock/punk band with a loud drummer (arent they all?) and I dont set my volume past 4. I can keep up with a Marshall half stack and still have half the dial left in reserve.

Your right, the clean is very nice, and is the reason I purchased the amp. Ive not found a dist/odrive pedal that I like with this amp yet, but I am getting very used to using the boost for my overdrive. That with a little chorus sounds great, IMO. If you play metal, this probably isnt the amp for you.

you might be right, i just wasnt really thinking about how loud it was......... it was filling up that huge Guitar Center room fairly nicely

still, i think i would want the 2x12s that the Reverberocket has

the SuperJet i played was used and at $349!...but it looked to be in great condition..it sounded really nice, and the old Gemini was really cool, it was less than that i think (really bad shape)

the thing with these amps is, they have a unique sound that i happen to like.....and i like the quirkyness of them.......like they have an input labeled "accordian"........i just think that is cool.......and on the old one, the reverb was labeled "Echo"......

i just hope i can find one i like in the 2x12 config.

The accordian input is also the hi gain input on these amps. That is where you get the juice out of them.

i noticed it sounded different........ i'm happy i switched back, cause, unlike most people, i don't want it juiced hahaha......i want the clean tones

i went to my former amp tech's shop today and i saw a reverborocket there.

Those things may look a bit small, but DAMN it's like a lead brick!! They should have put two handles for two people to carry it.

That's a good thing though, i figure since ampeg is primarily a bass amp company they tend to use quite oversized transformers giving you an amp that could easily contend with a twin.

So how does it stack up vs the twin reissue flank? I play more or less the same kind of stuff you play, hendrixish stuff, blues, and classic rock, so i'd really be interested in a good alternative to shelling out 1000 for a twin.

well....honestly, i had a whole different look on those fender reissue amps after playing the Ampegs...... the fenders seemed alot more trebly and harder to manage......the twin seemed a little sterile, and again, a little hard sounding, and it was too loud

the ampeg does not compare to the headroom of a twin reverb........but it starts to give a compressed clean tone, that seems smoother and easier to play with........ and then it overdrives quite smoothly as well, but keep in mind i had the treble knob lowered pretty low

idk, i just liked the unique hollow tone of the ampegs, and it seemed much more managable and friendly to play.....where as, the twins are somewhat louder, and harder sounding (in comparison to the ampegs)

is it middier than the fenders? I hear it gets some pretty slick bite.

Have you tried the superocket? 100 watts 2x12. I'm curious about that one too.
