Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I use to be exclusive to Mesa amplification. In my opinion, they are the best amp on the market, even now that I don't play them.

The funny thing, is as I move along, and my band finds a sound, I got myself draw out of that brand and into something more low gain, and more compact. So I went back to Fender amps after 3 years of gigging Mesa.

So yeah, I suppose I've never been on stage with anything but Fender or Mesa (Fender exclusive now really...), except when I need to fly gear; then I take a Vox with me.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I like a lot of different stuff. If I have good experiences with one or more models, I kind of bump the brand up on my informal list of ones I like. I've played and like multiple Marshalls, Fenders, and Mesas. It's not that I've tried everything out there and like those the best, it's just that those are the ones that are common in my area, I've played them and/or owned them, and I like them. But I also own a Behringer modeling combo, a Hughes & Kettner hybrid combo, and I'd potentially buy an amp from just about any manufacturer.

And 6L6s are freaking awesome. Both my tubes amps I own now have 6L6s in them. EL34s are flappy sounding to me. El84s are cool for lower volumes.

I've been rather brand loyal to Mesa Boogie but it's just kinda worked out that way. Having said that, I'd be open to other brands provided they sounded good and worked for my personal needs.

Probably loyal. It took a long time to find my sound and now I feel no need to change things.

I wouldn't mind giving other products a spin if I felt they had the sound and reliability I was looking for.

I tend to like the roar of a brit voiced, EL34 driven circuite ... I am amazingly happy with my Laney AOR after modding it a bit, and throwing a HUSH in the loop. I love the plexi sound but Iommi's 70's is where its at for me when it comes to things Plexi ... Laney Supergroup is my first amp of choice for all things vintage. So I am a Laney guy of sorts, Laney has this amazing pure Balls tone ... but its not like I am not jonesing for a metal face or a Soldano or Cornford ....

I wouldn't really say I'm loyal to any 1 brand, but I usually find myself going for EL34 British voiced amps.

I currently have in my possession:

Splawn Quick Rod - Heavilly influenced by hot rodded Marshalls of the 70s and 80s with some of it's own thing going on too.

Marshall JCM800 2210 - My 1st proper amp and the amp that got me into the tones I love today. Doesn't see much use nowadays as it's just totally outclassed in every way by the Splawn.

Carlsbro Top 50 - Vintage single channel amp with EL34s, 3 EQ controls and a volume control. Takes pedals very well and is probably my favourite clean amp that I've ever tried.

Matamp Little Rock - 6v6 4w amp that I tend to crank the volume on and abuse with a Treble Booster or 2 :D Get's very 'Marshall-y' when used in this way.

If I do ever get another amp I may get another Orange, I had an AD30 up until last year and sold it for the Spalwn, or a Vox AC30.

I play the field. I've gigged with several different amps and my tastes are still evolving.

What's up with all these brand loyalty threads at the moment? It's like a market research program.

The only brand I'm loyal to is Milk Chocolate Hob Nobs. Because all other biscuits are pathetic in comparison.

You sir bring up a very valid point.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I'm only brand-loyal to the point that the brand of amps I've been using for years have never let me down and always sound good to me.

That being said, I'm willing to try any good EL34 or KT88 design as long as I can be assured of its quality.

Re: Amps: Brand Loyal or PLay the FIeld

I build my own amps, but i take circuit ideas from anywhere and everywhere. I'm very loyal to the EF86 preamp valve though, it's been in almost everything I've built.
