Re: An Incoming NGD on my Birthday! FREE 1971 Fender Strat

Well, I lucked out on something ****ing awesome. I am getting a 1971 Fender Strat for free, with the original case and case candy, as well as the original tremolo arm! Hopefully it will be a great player, it doesn't have the original frets or electronics, but the electronics are included in the case. The guy I'm getting it off is a long time friend of mine and he is retiring the guitar from studio work.
Wow, you've certainly got everyone's attention. (Happy Birthday, too).

When do you expect to have the guitar in your hands ? Does the owner/ donor live near you, or will the guitar have to be sent from interstate, or ... ?

It's coming from where you are, Crusty. The guy I know is a long time friend of mine, and he's coming up from there to drop the guitar off. He's got Aspergers as well.

Happy Upcoming Birthday.

Screw the haters bud, I hope this is true for ya! Although I do agree though, selling this thing would be a huge slap in the face. Don't do it unless absolutely necessary (i.e. for food or rent, not for another guitar)

Screw the haters

Please do not confuse the absence of bogus positivity for hatred.

I have no doubt that Nathan would benefit from an American electric guitar. Unfortunately, I also have no doubt that he would be frustrated as **** to have possession of a guitar that he cannot make use of for want of costly refurbishment work.

Since there appears to be somebody on Australian Fæcesbook who is generous enough to donate a guitar, it might be a good idea to make absolutely certain that it is the one that the recipient wants/needs.

I concur that accepting the gift of an old Stratocaster only to flip it for some recent Gibson would be rank ingratitude.

Re: An Incoming NGD on my Birthday! FREE 1971 Fender Strat

You can't be serious. A quality fret level and dress costs more than that. If anyone if doing refrets at that price, do not go to them under any circumstances; they will **** up your guitar something fierce.

The idea of a 1971 Strat with a refret being worth $15,000 is completely ridiculous to me. Guitars of that era and quality were the reason that the old ones started becoming valuable in the first place. They are not good or desirable guitars. A truly N.O.S.-quality one, i.e. a true closet classic, might bring that from a really weird collector, just as a museum piece, but good player examples of these guitars are highly unlikely to break even a quarter of that. Beaters to decent ones can be found for 1–2 grand.

I agree, I saw an early 70's Fender Strat at a local GC for roughly $3k that had the orignal pickups and hardware...I could be wrong but I don't think of 70's Strats bringing 5 figures...

And yeah, $69 for a refret is just shouting "don't come here for services"

Re: An Incoming NGD on my Birthday! FREE 1971 Fender Strat

Refrets for a non bound board are $450 here in Kentucky.. That is the average rate and bound boards are more than that.

There is a ton of work that goes into a quality refret. Also, taking a gift and selling it is just ******y..

Seriously. If you end up not gelling with it, give it back to him and say that you appreciate it but it's just not for you. If you sell it, you'll end up being a dick.

I was under the impression it was an old friend, rather than some rand-o. And I do agree, if your not going to take it as is, better to go to someone else.

A Fæcesbook contact, apparently.

Part of the pedantic role that I adopted earlier in this thread is founded forum norms. "Pics or it hasn't happened."

Mostly, I was thinking, this is the Interweb. People post whilst drunk or otherwise chemically indisposed. The donor guitar might never materialise. RESULT - Disappointment and egg on face.

Also, I could not help thinking back four or five years to all of those guitars that one particular forum member would try in a music store, post about at length for approximately a week, then NOT buy.

Maybe, I am simply too old and cynical to be doing with the minute-by-minute, teenaged diary, angst baloney.

EDIT - Maybe, schmaybe. I am definitely too old fo' this poop.

Let's not pile on, OK? If it comes, it will do so in its' own time. Nothing Nathan can do to hurry up the process, although I know I'd feel like a kid waiting for the holidays.
