And so after trying EH, JJ, Svetlana, Sovtek....

Re: And so after trying EH, JJ, Svetlana, Sovtek....

Without context this post is useless.

The way valves sound and react across fifferent amps under different operating conditions can drastically alter the sound.

WHich amp are you talking of?
Which valve type?

I've always liked the Tung-Sols I've tried, they're usually my #1 choice.

Mesa MkII 6L6 Power Tubes. These sound so much warmer and bigger than the other tubes I've tried.

I probably should have put more context as I did like the EH tubes a ton in my Bassman... but I was happy and for a moment felt context was irrelevant. :D

I'm not a fan of the JJ's I have in my Marshall. I much liked the Svetlana's better. I hope to try Grooves next or possibly Tung-Sols

I like SED EL34s, and Tung Sol 12AX7s in my Marshalls.

In that case I will agree with you. I have some in my MKIIC+ clone granted there is also a pair of E34L's in it too so it's not entirely TS

New Sensor is putting out good quality stuff, whether Mullard, Tungsol, svetlana, etc.

Re: And so after trying EH, JJ, Svetlana, Sovtek....

I replaced the stock Sovtek ECC83 and tried a 12AX7 EHX in my Blackstar HTmetal 5 head in the power tube section and it made my clean channel sound fuzzy.

The preamp tube is a 12BH7 which I'm having trouble finding to replace the stock one...

After changing out tubes hundreds of times in dozens of amps, I know 2 things about what I like:

I don't like JJ's in anything.

I don't like one straight tube type in any amp. It always sounds better with a mix of brands.

Re: And so after trying EH, JJ, Svetlana, Sovtek....

No, they are rebranded Sovtek, EH, SED, JJ, Chinese tubes and a few of their own designs made for them in the Shuguang factory. In the old days, they tested and rebranded what are now considered NOS tubes, but as those disappeared, they had to start using current manufactured tubes from many companies. You can still sometimes find older GT tubes that were made by the big American and European companies, but they all closed down one by one, so they changed to what was available.

Al

Yeah.. They are alright. Rebranded sovteks.

What is it about them that you don't like?

Without a doubt, the best power tubes I've used in my Mesa amps are the Winged C/S.E.D. 6L6 and EL-34s. I typically have a mix of preamp tubes. I have JJ EL-84s in my DC-3 and my Maverick.
