Angus Young signature Vs. Duncan 59

What's the tone difference? Both seem like they are just wax potted PAF type pickups with alnico 5 mags. Also, I don't know why Gibson puts alnico II mags in their 60's SG reissues when I heard that they switched to alnico 5 mags during the 60s. Like all the Explorers, V's, and SGs had Alnico 5's I heard. You can hear the bright treble and mid scoop of the alnico 5 if you listen to AC/DC records; definitely not buttery mids like the 57 classics. I do think the 57's actually work good for Van Halen type stuff though, the mids seems to pop the harmonics out smoother then a 59. The 59 is more aggressive. What's up with the Angus Young signature? Is it just modeled after PAFs that got a alnico 5's in his SG? It would seem smarter and more economical to just buy a set of duncan 59's if you wanted that tone then. I just wanted to know because I am replacing my Blackouts in my faded Les Paul guitar because the output and sustain don't seem to go well with it's super light chambered body, but it's characteristics I think would make a good straight rock guitar.

Because the bass is very boomy in the '59s. The cheapest alternative to the AY signature is the 498t from gibson witch is about the same pickup while the best being the Rio Grande BBQ or the Seymour Duncan Brobucker.

check this out

see what i did there? it's called indenting and it ****in rules

as for your question(s)(?): there are probably a lot more structural differences between the two. Yeah they're both wax-potted PAF-style Alnico 5 magnets, just like a Hyundai and a Cadillac are both cars with four wheels.

Wire guage, amount of winds, even bobbin material are said to affect the tone.

Re: Angus Young signature Vs. Duncan 59

I heard the Angus was a hotter wound 498T. with a little tweaks. But I have never tried one.

Re: Angus Young signature Vs. Duncan 59

From what I've heard, Angus is now using Custom Shop Pearly Gates, which I'm guessing is PG's with a slightly overwound bridge. I don't know if they're A2 or A5 or a combo of that though.

SG's are awesome with a PGn or 59n, and either a 59, PG, Brobucker, Custom, or Custom 5 in the bridge. Because SG's are all mahogany, you want to avoid pickups with hyped mids like the JB or CC......maybe the APH too.

Re: Angus Young signature Vs. Duncan 59

@Empty Pockets...you're analogy is really dumb. I wasn't comparing cosmetics. A magnet really adds a lot of character, and I was expecting the Angus young to have vintage winds but I guess I was mistaken?

@everyone else: Why would his pickup be wound so hot? He uses stock pickups in his guitar. The 498t is a Hotter, more modern pickup. It's DC resistance is like 12.5 or something.

Re: Angus Young signature Vs. Duncan 59

I honestly think Angus has used a lot of pickups that come in his guitars from Gibson, no matter what they were. And I think his preference is for lower output A5 or A2 pickups.

I know Evan Skopp talked about loading his new guitars with Custom Shop PG's.
I have a Custom Shop SG Diablo, and I don't even feel the need to change the Burstbucker 1/2 set. I wondered if I should replace them at first, till I sunk into them and came to really like them a lot. I think the BB 1/2 is as close to old PAF's as I've heard. Those pickups sound amazing through my Bogner XTC, Marshall Jubilee, and Matchless Chieftain. PG's are probably in that tonal range too.

Right, in fact Frank Falbo said that they are basically PG's with an A5. He didn't want to (or couldn't?)get into the details though, so I don't know what the difference is otherwise. :dunno:

Re: Angus Young signature Vs. Duncan 59

From a post on MLP, where someone asked about a Slash pup, with an A5.

"I can't divulge any secrets but if I remember correctly, that is similar to what we've made for Angus. It's no surprise that you "found Angus" as well as Joe Perry in the Slash pickup with A5. As for it sounding "more like Slash" well that must just be in your fingers because you can't sound more like Slash than the AIIPro Slash. Even though he has used stock AIIPro's they were in the Derrig which screams acoustically. The AIIPro Slash brings much of that openness to guitars that AREN'T the Derrig. The rest is up to Slash.

It's only a matter of time before people recognize these pickups as amazing even for non-Slash fans. It's like someone talking about P.A.F.'s and saying they are only good for one particular artist's tone. That's crazy, they are good for anything. The Slash's are like that."

Sorry for the necro thread, but I just bought one of the Angus signature pickups and your description is EXACTLY how I was thinking of it. I took out a 498T and put in the Angus, and my immediate thoughts were, "This is like a 498T+."
I have to say, it sounds freaking monstrous! I liked the 498T but it wasn't that great for soloing, hence my decision to try something new.
The Angus Young pickup is just huge, I love it!
