Seriously, we already see Fender selling cheap guitars at Costco, what's the big deal? My first guitar came from Service Merchandise. Boy was it a POS but it was someplace to start. IMO they have to do something. There are so few kids picking up guitar these days, even if one in ten kids with a "department store special" keeps at it it'll probably be enough to keep guitar music alive.

If you read the article, you´ll see that these instruments will NOT be branded as Gibsons
I DOES piss me off immeasurably that the market will once again be diluted by a mass influx of mediocre instruments produced for the sole purpose of being "cheap", especially since even most of the instruments this was attempted with 10 years ago made a Johnson strat look like a Custom Fender....
Those instruments turned OFF more people than they turned on..... :yell:

It seems that I read this somewhere before, but I didn't comment on it. I will now.
While I don't care for Gibson anymore, I have to stand up for them just a little. They're not the ones to blame here. They are doing what any smart business would do. If you see a deficiency of a product that you can sell and make a profit, you're stupid not to, if you're in the business to make money. I can't blame them for wanting a piece of that (probably) million dollar market.
The problem is that parents need to be educated on the matter. There are some that know the guitars are junk and intentionally buy them to shut their kids up, knowing full well that the guitar will be thrown under the bed or used as a coat hanger in a couple of weeks. Those parents need to either put their foot down and not waste the money or let their kid try something out that they have the potential of enjoying. You shouldn't make up the child's mind for them.
The other parents need to be taught that these instruments are junk and their child will most likely never learn to play on that guitar. True, there may be some that do, but there are others that have the potential to grow into great musicians that get discouraged and give up because they can't play a 2x4 with a few strings stretched across it. They need to be shown that if they make the investment their kids have a potential, and if they end up not liking the guitar, they didn't really lose any more money. A First Act guitar or one of these "Gibson"s will have NO resale value. A real Gibson or Fender will not lose that much value in a few weeks.

It's so true. Try putting together a band and you'll see what I mean - you will find 20 guitarists who are interested, and not a single bassist. Keyboardists are hard to find too. I guess everyone wants to play guitar.
Gibson has made a lot of very questionable business decisions lately. Couple that with the declining quality of their product, and we may be witnessing the last days of this historic company.
Meanwhile, FMIC seems to be doing everything right business-wise, and the quality of their product has improved dramatically in the past 5 - 10 years. Expect them to be around for a very long time.
