Re: Another Epi post
Fiber,
The quality of the Epiphone is fine. Very, very good in fact.
Out of the box, that is.
The problem I see quite often...is that the major music retailers put a ton of guitars out on the floor...and they don't seem to care WHO plays them. I've seen 12 year olds beating on PRS's. Trust me, the quality of even that guitar would be questionable after some kid has banged the headstock into the amp, accidently broken the pickup selector switch, and scratched the finish because he's using a dime to play instead of a pick.
The 310 is great if you like SG's.
If you find it to your liking, tell the store you want one in a box. They'll tell you that everything is on the floor, but that's not true (usually). As with ANY brand guitar, you'll need to inspect it for any issues which might have resulted from shipping, or in some cases....the manufacturing process. That statement isn't contradicting the above, by the way...as EVERY manufacturer ships guitars that may not be 100%.
BUT....
Definitely play an SG styled guitar before buying it. Because of their design, they're inherently neck heavy....and will want to "dip" on you all the time (you can't let go of the neck with your left hand unless you wanna watch the headstock aiming for the floor.) They also join the body in an awkward place. Yes, you have terrific upper fret access....but...two things happen.
One, the neck "seems" extraordinarily long. If you go to play an open "E" chord, you'll feel as though your left arm is extended as far as it will go. Make sure you're comfortable with that.
Secondly, the neck joint is slightly delicate compared to many other models. Again, this is because of how it's joined to the body. The body is also very thin, which exacerbates the problem.

They have some incredibly cheap guitars that are built pretty well and sound great.
Good luck with your decision....and have fun tryin them out!
