Another Epi post :(

Yeah I know there has been tons of posts on Epiphones, but I didn't find any threads/post particually on the Epiphone G-310. I was wondering what are the you guy's experiences with them. I have heard that they sound thin. Well I didn't get as much money for X-mas as I planned and I am looking into this guitar. It's cheap and I will diffenitly put Duncans and change the electronics, also the tuners are not the plastic ones so I don't think they will need to be replace. Will those mods make the Epi G-310 sound thicker and make it a nice bang for the buck guitar? It looks nice for 200 bucks new!
Thanks for the feedback in advance

Re: Another Epi post :(

i got the g310 junior, listen to the soundclips and make your own opinion if it's thin or not

Re: Another Epi post :(

i think the general hard and fast rule with epis is they can vary wildly.. i know a guy with a G-400, which he loves and it's pretty comfy to play.. then again, you see some real horror stories in some guitar stores...

best bet? go to a BIG store and try half a dozen.. just to find a neck and set-up you like. if you're gonna put duncans in, and you're happy with how it plays, the rest will sort itself out :)

Thanks for the reply, Yeah I was gonna head down to GC to test em out. I have 2 stores close to me Sam Ash has terrible supply and other store is good but its a sort of Mom and Pop sort of store which is really good store but doesn't have big supply of things. So I was gonna take the 45 minute trip to GC to check it out.

Re: Another Epi post :(

Fiber,

The quality of the Epiphone is fine. Very, very good in fact.

Out of the box, that is.

The problem I see quite often...is that the major music retailers put a ton of guitars out on the floor...and they don't seem to care WHO plays them. I've seen 12 year olds beating on PRS's. Trust me, the quality of even that guitar would be questionable after some kid has banged the headstock into the amp, accidently broken the pickup selector switch, and scratched the finish because he's using a dime to play instead of a pick.

The 310 is great if you like SG's.

If you find it to your liking, tell the store you want one in a box. They'll tell you that everything is on the floor, but that's not true (usually). As with ANY brand guitar, you'll need to inspect it for any issues which might have resulted from shipping, or in some cases....the manufacturing process. That statement isn't contradicting the above, by the way...as EVERY manufacturer ships guitars that may not be 100%.

BUT....

Definitely play an SG styled guitar before buying it. Because of their design, they're inherently neck heavy....and will want to "dip" on you all the time (you can't let go of the neck with your left hand unless you wanna watch the headstock aiming for the floor.) They also join the body in an awkward place. Yes, you have terrific upper fret access....but...two things happen.

One, the neck "seems" extraordinarily long. If you go to play an open "E" chord, you'll feel as though your left arm is extended as far as it will go. Make sure you're comfortable with that.

Secondly, the neck joint is slightly delicate compared to many other models. Again, this is because of how it's joined to the body. The body is also very thin, which exacerbates the problem.

If you're on a tight budget, you may also want to check out www.rondomusic.com

They have some incredibly cheap guitars that are built pretty well and sound great.

Good luck with your decision....and have fun tryin them out!

Dave

yea, all of em are with my SG

Re: Another Epi post :(

Thanks MediaArts, very good post. Between davey's clips and your very thorough post, buying the G 310 is something I should of done along time ago. I love SG guitars and I wanted one since I was like 7 years old! So this guitar will most likely cure a really long case of GAS. Thanks for the posts everyone, since the holidays I couldn't really get to any music stores so it will have to wait till later this week. :yell: Thank you everyone :yourock:

This is true wisdom right here. Always try out multiple guitars, even on a line that others say "suck" because odds are not many people have tried that many before purchasing theirs and that's why they don't have a really great instrument.

If it plays well, feels good, looks immaculate and sounds amazing unplugged, it doesn't matter if it's $100 or $2500, it's a good instrument. I couldn't believe my gf's uncle picked up an Epi Special II for $150, that thing was so amazing I couldn't believe it, it sounded better unplugged than my Gibson LP Standard. Pickups do a heck of a lot more than people give them credit for. You can take the properties of about *any* guitar and mold them to your taste with pickups. Get a thin guitar, get beefy pups, got a bright guitar, get dark pickups, etc...

the mods would be cost more then the hole guitar, right?

Re: Another Epi post :(

I think that if your going to buy and beef up a g-310 you might as well go for the G-400. I have played the 310 and i own a g-400 with custom bridge and AIIpro neck and it sounds awesome. The G-400 has a setneck and i think the price difference would be worth it.

Re: Another Epi post :(

Well the reason I would be getting the G310 is because I thought I would be getting more money for christmas, but instead of giving me money my relatives gave me gift cards (go figure :( ) I was going to buy a Hamer Standard Import but now I won't have enough money for that for about another month or so. I didn't know it was bolt on neck! I was gonna go try it out tomorrow any how.
