Another Gibson Question: ES 336 or ES 356

These are Custom Shop guitars with a body maybe 2/3 the size of a 335. Has anyone tried one of these? Again, they get rave reviews on Harmony Central.

From what I gather, they're similar to my Hamer Monoco in that the body is hollowed/chambered from a solid piece of Honduras Mahogany and then an arched flame maple cap is glued over that.

I love my Monoco, but I'd still like a guitar similar to my ES 355.

Thanks! Lew

I think you're referring to the CS-336/356 (not ES)? If I could only have one guitar, this would be it! I'd go for a 336 in tobacco sunburst, but that's me. One guitar that had me climbing the walls recently was a Lee Roy Parnell CS-336. It's from the custom authentic line, so it's aged looking. Basic black CS-336 with aged nickel hardware, and I think an ebony fretboard...I almost sold my Oxblood LP to get that one :D

They come with Classic '57 pickups, which I happen to like. About that same size as a LP in the body, but have the semi-hollow vibe going on. They play and sound great! If I ever get in the consolodation mood again, I'll be paring down to a CS-336 and a Tele.

Yes that's the one: CS...not ES. Thanks! Here's a link to one:

I'm not a fan of the Bigsby tho...I hate the way they make a guitar feel spongey. It's available with a Les Paul type stop tailpiece too...that'd be the model I'd be interested in.

Yup, I'd go with a stop bar, too. I only like Bigsby's on big, fat hollowbodies :D

Here's what I'd get,

Here's the Lee Roy Parnell model, http://www.gibsoncustom.com/Signature/LRP_336.htm

I missed a super deal on one of these, Dave's Guitar was selling one for $1795. Before I could call, it was gone :(

The CS-356 is one of my dream guitars. Gibson custom shop craftsmanship, highly flamed resonant body, standard electronics and tremelo bar. Dream come true!

What much would you expect to pay for one Chris? New or used? Thanks, Lew

Here's another one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3713262773&indexURL=3#ebayphotohosting
Lew,

I saw that one the other day and thought that was nice but expensive (suspect that you have got to be able to pick them up cheaper in your neck of the woods!!). I noticed that it has not been sold and it may come on again. If you are interested, I don't live to far way and could go and have a look for you and let you know. Obviously if the guy has still got it and that he is willing to let me go there.

Thanks Norman. I'm not interested in that one...they're about $1000 less here in the states. But I appreciate the offer. Did you get your pickguard yet? Lew

Re: Another Gibson Question: ES 336 or ES 356

Hey all,
I just played one of these (336) on Monday. mI loved it !!! real buttery type of neck. Played great sounded real doog too. I personally like the feel of a 335 a little better. I found the body size to be a liitle awkward. But thats me, sound and playability I would give it a 10 on both

Re: Another Gibson Question: ES 336 or ES 356

Thanks guys! I wonder how they'd compare to my Monoc Super pro? Both the same woods and similar concept in terms of the body being hollowed from a solid piece of mahogany and then capped with a carved flame maple top. Generally, I find single cutaway guitars like my Monoco or Les Paul to have a little fatter tone...especially in the bass and lower mids. Lew

Re: Another Gibson Question: ES 336 or ES 356

The CS356, (if I actually HAD the money) I would buy for around $2500. Some people try and mark it way up and since they aren't on eBay everyday, people think that's the average going price.
