Another Wiring Issue

Hello everyone.

I have been digging information of any kind in this forum for a long time and in this particular obstacle seems that nobody can help me. So, I've become an official member of this wonderful community now to be able to ask you for your kind help.

I've got an unbranded strat I want to hot-rod with a humbucker on the bridge position. So far, so good. I bought a generic 4-conductor rail humbucker (single sized) and the Megaswitch (the E version) to help me towards my goal. Which is to have the humbucker split at positions 2 (inner coil bridge and middle sc in parallel and hum-cancelling) and 3 (outer coil bridge and neck sc in parallel and hum-cancelling) of the switch and when in position 1 (bridge only in series) to be able to switch between series/parallel with a push/pull pot.

Now, the first part concerning splitting is perfectly doable, I have studied the schematics and have figured that one out. The series/parallel switching though, I can't figure out. How can the DPDT switch be wired, so that I achieve this variability? Please mind that I'm going with a master volume/master tone configuration and I reaaaaally don't want to use another switch. Can it be done, and if yes, how?

Thanks everyone again for the really resourceful and helpful community you have established here and for any future information.

Take care and good day!

Re: Another Wiring Issue

So, just to clarify... you need a diagram for switching the bridge humbucker between series and parallel... is that correct?

Re: Another Wiring Issue

That is correct, yes. However, it must allow splitting to either coil after it.

This is how the switching is done if it helps.

Therein lies your problem.

The Schaller Megaswitch E requires that the series link between the two coils of the Rails pickup be permanent whereas the DPDT series/parallel switch requires that they are only linked by the terminals of the DPDT switch.

What might work is treating half of the Rails pickup as a single coil. Follow the Schaller instructions for three single coils. The second coil of the Rails pickup would be added via the DPDT.

It is going to take some head scratching to devise a way to do this.

Re: Another Wiring Issue

hm...so only one coil of the bridge humbucker will be involved in switching and the DPDT would add the second coil either in parallel or in series right? that's a wonderful idea if I manage the headscratching part..!

Re: Another Wiring Issue

I did once attempt to re-wire a Roland G-505 to HSS in the manner that you describe (except for the Megaswitch). I ended up with with no automatic coil split. Just a series/single/parallel DP3T on/on/on for the bridge position pickup. Some of the sounds sucked major league cork. Eventually, I undid the mode switching portion of my circuit, leaving an embarrassing hole in the pickguard.

Re: Another Wiring Issue

If I use the normal series/parallel wiring of a DPDT as in the schematic here and instead of a jumper on the top lugs just lead the wires to the switch lug 6, the switch will work when the push/pull is on series and when in position 1 the DPDT will also switch between series/parallel, isn't it? The problem is that if the push/pull is on parallel nothing will work on the switch at positions 2 and 3, do I got it right?

Close. I redrew it just to make sure. You'd have this:

Note: The push-pull pins are shown upside down. You could do this better with a Superswitch, but the "E" switch will work with those limitations.

Thank you so much Artie! This will work like a charm for my needs (experimentation mostly).
