Ants magnet?

What is the magnet in the Ants neck?

I always thought it was a A3? yes/no?

While we're at it ... bridge is A5? Yes/no?

Are they aged/demagnetized?

PS: Ants made within the last year.

Re: Ants magnet?

I think you are talking about antiquity humbuckers right?

If so ants have dun-aged a2 magnets in them, both the bridge and the neck. A5 bridge a2 or a3 neck is a great mod on them tho! But it ain't standard.

Thanks... yes humbuckers.

Don't you have an A3 in the neck?

I have an A3 in my Seth Lover neck that I paired with an A5 loaded Antiquity bridge for probably the longest time of any pickup selection I've tried.

Don't mention it.

Yes, I have 2 ant sets with a5 bridges and a3 necks. Love them!

Re: Ants magnet?

The question was for a friend who got 2nd hand some Custom Shop Ants with 'real' (non aged) Gold PU covers.

Odly, they had a sticker in the back that said: 'Evenly Voice Enhanced' ~ EVH model BUT the wire was braided and they definitely were not wax potted.

From Meter
bridge= 8.60 DC Ohms
neck= 8.18 DC Ohms

Box said Ants but ...

bridge= 8.70 DC Ohms
neck= 8.6 DC Ohms

Any comments on this mystery?

Re: Ants magnet?

sounds like he might have a nice set of pups

so are 8.6 and 8.18 the real readings of the pups or are 8.7/8.6?

Seth Lover with A3 ... Interesting. Fatter yet still subdued sound?

I know this has been asked a lot but ... Where do you get A3 magnets?

I got some A5s and A2s from Torres Engineering ... but no A3s.

Is there a major thread with PU magnet swap results becasue I'd love to read it and I have a few experiments results of my own.

The 8.6b & 8.18n are from the meter.

8.7b & 8.6n is MJ's hand writing on the boxes.

Re: Ants magnet?

If you can get hold of Steven Kersting, he sells a2's a3's and a5's. For a4's contact Lew, and see if he has some left. He got them from Fralin by the popular demand from this forum. A very cool move indeed.

Check out the following for my modest a2/a3 test:

Re: Ants magnet?

I'm the 'friend' in question - got these shoehorned into my Epiphone Dot yesterday.

They sure sound like PAFs, they're definitely unpotted, and they have evenly voiced harmonics stickers and gibson-style pushback braid wire. They're not signed on the bottom, and I didn't take the covers off to see if the magnets were signed.

The rest of the specs from MJ's label:

Magnets: A II
15 Gauss
"A" HBB (bridge)
"A" HBN (neck)

I like the way they sound, so the story sort of ends here I guess! The rest will remain a mystery - unless anyone has more insight?

That's what counts ... :dance:
