Any advice for moving input jack?

I love my little Epiphone SG, but the input jack location drives me nuts. Anyone had any experience moving it to the side? What would I fill the whole with?

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

I don't have an "input" jack on any of my SG's. But the location of the "output" jack can be a bit annoying. It's not a difficult task to move it to the side depending on what jack plate you use. I like to use the Telecaster Electrosocket jack plate because it fits the narrow side of an SG better than any other plate.

I wouldn't try to fill the "whole", but one thing that many people do to cover "holes" is to use a grommet like this...

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

I have two Gibson SG Juniors, so I hear what you're saying, and not to be a "Debbie Downer", but I'd say they put those on the front for a reason. SG's are so thin that you'd probably fukk the guitar up trying to drill in and move it to the side. Just my opinion. If you haven't already, try using a right angled cable and wear it back through your strap. It helps. Sorry I couldn't have been of much help.

+1 This is the answer.

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

They should use a Strat-type socket in the back on the bass side. Heresy! But it would make more sense, and look better from the front.

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

^ There are good practical ideas that are coincidentally VERY bad luthiery ideas.

I hadn't thought about that. I think you're probably right.

Even just having it an inch further away from the pots would make a huge difference I think.

This is probably true. But if we were designing guitars from a practical standpoint, they might look really different.

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

Yeah, I hear you on that one. I think guitars become a mix of practicality, aesthetics and science. No element having quite enough of the whole to be fully realised.

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

Anytime I ever see a fully realized design incorporating one of those things, it is always fascinating. But it never catches on. And I can never afford it.

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

Perhaps the ideal place would be engineered into the strap button like on an electro acoustic, I'm suprised no-one's tried it

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

Because it would be absolute nightmare to make.....how much wood has to be drilled through, then how on earth do you have a secure strap anchor after the prime bit of wood is removed..

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

You could do this. I did it on a ibanez sabre that needed modding.

it was risky actually but i imagine the sg body would be more forgiving than the sabre.

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

^ see, that actually makes sense to me. It isn't sticking out on the front (I always hated that look) and it can be leaned up against something. My Steinbergers and Brian Moore have a jack similar to this on the back. It is a really good idea.

I think you could use a socket similar to this with a self tapping thread, I think it could work I'm genuinely surprised no new builder has tried it

Aiiiiiiiiii i thought so and you know what? Yamaha have an even cooler setup. :cool2:

Anything is possible just make sure you do your measurements.

Re: Any advice for moving input jack?

^ Yeah! What model is that?
I always thought the jack being on the face of a guitar was a disaster waiting to happen, and it never looked good (SGs, 335s).
