Any country players here?

I know we have our share of blues players and metal heads. Certainly a number of jazz players.

But does anyone play country music?

I would love to get into playing more country. I love players like Chet Atkins, Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Jim Jorgenson...

I'd love to get some tips and recommendations on resources for country music.

Any essential artists? Techniques I should develop?

Re: Any country players here?

I want to learn country as well. It's a style that takes advantage of the electric guitar thoroughly.

Re: Any country players here?

I play a little bit, but nothing exciting.

You will find some great chicken pickin' discussion on TDPRI

Re: Any country players here?

I have always played metal, but heard my neighbor play and decided that I was really missing out. He doesn't play anything past the 1950s, no guitar pic, mainly jazz/country/blues and it is always jaw dropping to hear him shred an acoustic with those styles. I worked out a deal for guitar lessons from him and now I am completely bi-polar on the gutiar. I basically just play metal and old fashioned knee slapping country stuff. Here is a diddy that I recorded when I was first learning the new skills:

I can't get enough Jimmy Bryant, a true guitar hero.

I love old country music, and I love playing it. I have played in country/folk bands in the past, but not at this time. However, I would call country one of my "default" styles. It is a huge part of my musical vocabulary, no matter what style I am playing.

I play a bit. Albert Lee, Brent Mason, Vince Gill, Redd Volkaert, Greg Koch, Brad paisley, to name a few should get you started. just go to youtube and you'll find all you desire...

As far as technique, one of the single most important tips is a strong right-hand technique. When I first started, I sounded like a Rock guy playing in Country scales. Once I realized the right-hand technique's importance, things started improving.

Re: Any country players here?

I normally play European freejazz. But I like a lot of styles, and also try to play them, but only at home. I like to play country style to Lucinda Williams records. Especially her Car Wheels On a Gravel Road is great, where Gurf Morlix plays extraordinary good. He often use a Gretsch Duo Jet 1956 with a Bigsby, and he´s actually my favo country guitarist.

Re: Any country players here?

Although JB played a Tele (and a prewar L10 a lot), he was more in the western swing bag like Hank Garland, Billy Byrd, etc. The twangy Tele thing is really a LA/Bakersfield deal...Joe Maphis (on a Mosrite)/Roy Nichols/James Burton/Don Rich et al. By the 70's, Clarence White, Albert Lee, and a few other people ramped all that up to what you hear on commercial country lately. Learn the Buck Owens instrumentals and try some Jimmy Bryant and Hank Garland stuff...

Re: Any country players here?

I love to play my tele and strat with country infused licks not sure though if I really consider myself a country player though (my chops aren't good enough!)

Re: Any country players here?

As much as I love my current project (and I do), I've made more money playing country in the last 34 years than I've EVER made playing rock, jazz, blues, or anything else. My first pro band was a country band, and I had all sorts of influences from all sides when I was learning to play, so, if you ask if I'm a country player, I'm not sure I can say "yes", but I've done a lot of it.

As far as country guitar players, I haven't decided yet if Paisley or Gill qualify as country players in my own mind. They certainly play modern country and they play it well, but there's a lot more "rock" in today's version than the old style, and sometimes it seems to me that today's country is really just 70's rock without the attitude. Chet Atkins definitely had that sort of touch. If you're looking for what I'd consider to be groundbreaking country pickers, check out Jimmy Bryant (early version of Paisley if you ask me), Jerry Reed, Merle Travis, Luther Perkins, Roy Clark, Don Rich, Eldon Shamblin and Roger Miller. It's all good stuff, though.

I dabble...still comes out bluesy.

Me too. I have played bass/backing vocals for a mate that plays old country, stuff like old Hank, Carter Family, Buck Owens, and such. Fun!

Based on my limited experiences, I'd try to get a grounding in that old country style, and then see where you go from there. The players you mention received their motivation from the old players, and while a player like Brad Paisley may provide the inspiration for the licks you learn, it doesn't hurt to know a bit of the history. Have fun!

Danny Gatton, Brent Mason, and Johnny Hiland all have amazing instructional DVDs. I own a Danny Gatton and have borrowed some others. The problem is I usually just sit and stare, dumbstruck, at their playing and forget I'm supposed to be learning something.

Re: Any country players here?

I just picked up Steve Trovato - Country Guitar in 6 Weeks. Let's see how I feel about my country chops in 6 weeks.

Re: Any country players here?

I switched over and started playing country as a challenge and better financial opportunity. You can't hide behind gain and have to really play right. Plus you can clearly hear those pickups, huh.
