Any decent JCM800 in a box, for pretty high gain stuff?

Well the whole 'Zakk Wylde' tone in a box thing always was appealing, so I'm wondering if you guys know of any pedals that sound like a decent JCM800 emulation, for pretty high gain stuff, or simply of a DS1 can be made to sound like this? Thanks!

Well, you could always get the MG Microstack :D. Zakk says "the distortion is crushing!"

DS-1 after the Stratdeluxer mods sound a lot like an 800...if you do a search for the Spina or Stratdeluxer DS-1 you'll find several reviews and if I remember right I even made mention of Zack in my Spina DS-1 review.

Add the M.I. Audio Crunchbox to the list. There is one for sale in the trading post.

The wildest thing I've found about John's DS-1 mod is that it seems to have a subtle envelope quality about it (I don't know how to better explain it...sag?).

I can't do the Stratdeluxer mod... If I got a DS1 it'd have to be bought in store, and then with the costs of shipping I could actually buy a JCM800.
MI audio stuff don't exist over here much either.
I'll be on the lookout for mods on the net, but I'm going to get a DS1 sometimes soon then :) Thanks dudes!

Re: Any decent JCM800 in a box, for pretty high gain stuff?

Well I just got a DS1.

I like the stock tone. It's pretty busszaw like with a dollop of distortion though. No smooth tone out of it yet.

The tone control is WEIRD. At the middle, it's just not bright enough. But if I move it more than a couple of degrees... It's either mud paradise or treble hell. Go figure. This one won't move.
The pedal is loud, but not TOO loud. The level control is fine.
The drive doesn't make the pedal very noisy, which is a good thing.
Oh and the clarity isn't really good.
I can't wait to try and mod this one!

Thanks for that dude! But 5 J201? Does it get noisy a bit?

Not when it's boxed up and shielded properly. It's gotten good reviews in the DIY board. It can be a bit bright though, which is the nature of that amp to begin with. That can be tamed though with some cap changes.

Each J201 is 1/2 of a preamp tube. The last 2 J201's emulate the phase inverter stage and power amp stage (to a point, not exactly).

It seems like a cool project dude, if only I could try it... Thanks for the link though, I just assimilated the theory :D

I'm yet to finish it myself. :smack: :D

Good luck haha! Actually on the HC forums there's a guy called OLCcircuits who is REALLY cool and helpful. He sells the Thunderchief, and I've been wanting to try one out someday. Get back to me on the JCM800 pedal when you finish it, I'd be interested!

I've tried searches but nothing came up. I even searched for Boss DS1 and it tells me 'sorry, no match'. I'll look for it manually. Thanks!

DS-1 into a Laney AOR100 :) That's what my sister is using and it's freakin insane!

Re: Any decent JCM800 in a box, for pretty high gain stuff?

Welll actually I have a Laney AOR30 112 combo. It's not really great at all :(
How does she set her DS1? As a boost, or full distortion?

On several occasions I've ordered a pedal for one of my UK buddies from my home, modded the pedal and sent it out to them...

Squeeky wheel gets the grease....:usa1:

I don't have enough cash man, it's as simple as that. I know you do it, but I simply can't afford it. Sorry.
