I don't have enough cash man, it's as simple as that. I know you do it, but I simply can't afford it. Sorry.

I'm sorry for you...No apologies needed on your end! :13:

All of us are sworn not to post my mod prices here on the forums! :laugh2: You should be able to do a search under DS1 mods,Stratdeluxer mods etc....There are alot of reviews!

I've done some of the Keeley mods to my DS-1. The difference from stock is night and day. It's amazing what a few little part changes can make. Swapping the silicon diodes for Ge diodes or even LED's makes a massive difference. I like two red LED's myself. Mine sounds so much different now and I cannot stand how it sounds stock. It was stock no more than an hour after I got home with it. The iron was warming up while I toyed with the settings with it in stock form.

DS-1...hehe now that is a fun pedal to mod!:D

And only a $40 pedal to buy here in the US,which makes it a great candidate for modding!

Robert's Ultra mod is cool, but his SEM mod sounds terrible to me with the LEDs.....:smack:

He uses 1 LED in series with a Ge diode and leaves the other Si diode already there in the SEM mod. I tried that too and didn't like it so I pulled both Si diodes and put two LED's in their place. Lew heard it at the Dallas Guitar Show through Bruce's 18 watt Aurora. It sounded massive. There's some changes I did to mine that aren't in the Keeley mods. In fact, what I did to mine is a combination of Keeley's and another guy's from the DIY boards. Robert has changed his SEM and Ultra mods from what were once available in detail on his site.

35 pounds here. For this price I just thought '**** it' and went for it. But right now it seems more like a rectum frier in a box with less gain.

ErikH, I think I'll have a go at your stompbox actually. Do you have any ideas on where I could find a box for it? Because here, that's a lost cause. I probably could do it on perboard and find the parts at my local maplin though.

I'm pretty sure the Tone Pad Effects site has plans for you to build your own Boss DS1?

Here it is...

Purchase a DS1 Mod Idea Sheet?

Get a Hammond 1590BB or one about the same size. I'm surprised Maplin doesn't have them. They might or could get one for you.

If you want to do a perf layout rather than making your own PCB, then start with the Thunderchief perf layout from Runoffgroove.com and make the appropriate changes to it to suit the JCM800 circuit. Make sure to use the schematic by Electrictabs. His has been verified.

Gotta throw a vote in here for the Plexitone. I think the high gain channel does a great JCM 800. Sounds just like the one I used to have. Actually, a little warmer and fatter. More like a late 70s JMP with a JCM 800 topping.

Money is an issue with the forum member though! :yell:

A little out of my budget, though it was actually on my list for a while :)

Thanks John! I'll see if they take paypal and try to get the mod sheet. Otherwise I'll just do the common mods: swap out the diodes for LEDs, change a couple of caps that are on the signal path to change the voicing, maybe increase or decrease the gain of some FETs... I have the schematics so I know approximately where to swap out. Thanks guys!
ErikH: Maplin here only sells plastic boxes basically... they're like an electronics store basically. Good idea about the Thunderchief. If I remember my schematics well, the JCM800 has very similar circuits to a Plexi, and the actual low input on the 800 is similar to a Plexi normal input no?

Ah well I got the mod sheet anyway haha... I'll see what gives. Thanks!

Make sure you buy a "good" solder sucker, otherwise you risk burning through the traces on the board! It's very tedious work and it's easy to screw something up...Take your time but also have the right tools..

Re: Any decent JCM800 in a box, for pretty high gain stuff?

Pierre: Check with Smallbear Electronics. He has some good prices on Hammond boxes and even Taiwanese copies of them.

The DS-1 is a fun circuit to mod. Have fun with it and use your ears a lot. They're the best too when it comes to what sounds right. ;)
