Any EVM12L Camper here?

I see a lot of discussion about how speakers color the amp sound, but I don't see many saying they don't want the speakers to color the amp sound. The later would opt for EV 12L and I'd like to hear the opinion on the speaker.

They sound amazing with Blackface Fenders and Mark series Mesa. They clean sound is clear and lush while the lead sound is ultra tight, smooth, and focused. Depending on how you dial it you can get either Brad Gillis or Santana without any trouble.

Running Marshalls with KT88s or 6550s into them sounds like Zakk Wylde. Though due to the extended highs you should avoid EL34s like the plague when using them.

My bro's selling a pair, if you're interested drop me a pm.

I like the EVM-12L. I acquired one by accident (in a trade well over twenty years ago), and it has become an integral part of what I identify with.

The EV stands out as keeping it's composure (some say stiffness/sterility...a valid point) from the lowest volumes, until the amp cannot give ANY more.

They are a perfect match for Mesa combos, as there are few individual speakers that can take the push from an open back 1x12 100 watt Boogie combo. Mesa is the known for extra gain, and one of the best attributes of the EVM-12L is that it quenches "fizziness". Mesa could have always used a less expensive speaker, and pocketed the difference...but they put the best speaker they could find with EV's. The reason why EV's are not very popular is directly related to the cost, and secondarily the weight. BTW, these speakers NEED to be attached by more than four nuts/bolts.

I have used the EV with 6550's and 6L6's. A person needs to like their guitar/amp tone before they mess with EV's, because EV's are not going to have a particular "sweet spot". It is simply a speaker that refuses to get pushed around, yet the high efficiency gives you all volume you need.

The 12L is definitely the most flexible speaker to put into a 1x12", probably also 2x12". You can bend it to do many things with the right amp.

Whether that is what you want or whether you need the speaker color for what you are trying to do is a different matter.

Wouldn't it sound too boxy in Mark IV wideboy combo because the cab construction isn't exactly the best for such a large speaker?

I never noticed boxiness, but I was using it with a large head, with a lot of clean bottom. Going back 25 years, the list of a single/reliable/commonly available speaker out there for 100 watts (or more) in an open box, is fairly short. EVM-12L's are such a force on their own, they seem to be more independent of the amp, and the box they are installed in. They are a rock!

I actually missed the added shimmer of the open back, when I took the EV, and put it in a closed 2x12.
