any speaker recomendations?

Re: any speaker recomendations?

I have experience with the Cannabis Rex and the V30 in an open back 6L6 powered 40 watt combo. Although they're supposed to be different sensitivities, they are pretty closely matched volume-wise.

The V30 barks out whatever you're playing . . . it's got a very strong upper mid sound that I could never deal with for cleans, but sounds pretty good for distorted work. The upper mid spike is more balanced when you put this speaker in a closed back cab.

The Cannabis Rex is a smooth, clear sounding speaker. It's very articulate and avoids sounding muddy, but the highs never seem to sound piercing. This is an awesome speaker for cleans and slightly distorted sounds, but it doesn't seem to do hard rock or metal type gain as well as the v30.

Howdy,

Consider Weber's 50 watt Blue Dog or Silver Bell with AlniCo magnets. I'd suggest the somewhat warmer, bassier Silver Bell. Sounds great in my EL84 (18 watt) Carmen Ghia. Good luck! These speakers run around $200 new, btw.

Re: any speaker recomendations?

I just put an Eminence Legend GB128 (Greeback, 12 inch, 8 ohm) into my Ampeg Jet II, and it sounds really great. $75 shipped seems well worth it for a really nice sounding U.S.A.-made speaker.

It is only a 50W speaker, though. Might be an issue if you normally play with the amp cranked. My amp is 15W, so a 50W speaker is more than adequate.

Also, I did have to modify my amp's chassis to prevent contact with the magnet. I could fit it if the chassis rested on top of the magnet, but I thought that was a bad idea, and I was already hearing some rattles. A few minutes with a rotary sanding tool in my drill press, a few minutes smoothing out the rough edges by hand, and it was done. Not sure if this will be an issue in your amp, but be aware that such problems can exist when upgrading speakers.

Depends what you're going for, but I would stay clear of the hemp-coned speakers like the C Rex as they are darker, and would just take away the beautiful Fender sparkle. Also the mids would be smoother and Fenders are pretty scooped as is.

I'd go with a Weber 12A125A (Jensen P12Q clone) or something along the lines of an American design. The nice thing about the Webers is you can order it to whatever power-rating you need.

I'm a big fan of the eminence texas heat. American sounding with 1/3 British highs. Great for an american voiced amp but also has some brit high end for good distortion/overdrive.

This would split the difference between the c rex and v 30.

Re: any speaker recomendations?

I own two Hot Rod Deluxes and have experimented like crazy with speakers including Celestion G12M-25 Greenback; G12P-80; Vintage 30; G12T-75; Blue Alnico and other Celestion offerings. I've tried Eminence Legend 122; Legend V12: Red Fang; Legend 125 and others. This is my kind of thread.

I do not recommend the Celestion Vintage 30 in these amps. It handles the bass very well and it helps the drive, but it sucks the beautiful Fender tone right out of the amp.

I love the Eminence Red Fang. If you are going to use 12AX7s in V1 and V3, it is the speaker that I would recommend. Keep in mind that it is a very tight fit. I had about 1/32 inch clearance when I had it in my HRD. It sounds very good in this amp, but it is not the best. Read on.

I actually like the stock Eminence Legend 125 speaker that comes in these amps. The problem is that they can't handle all of the bass the amp puts out when you use a 12AX7 in V1. Before spending the $ to change out the speaker, I recommend trying a 12AY7 in V1 or an older U.S. made (not the Sovtek) 5751. With the lower gain, the stock speaker does not crap out it. In fact, it sounds just about excellent.

That said, there are 3 speakers that I think excel in the HRD. My favorite: the Reverend Alltone 1250. These are not made anymore. If you can find one, grab it. Beautiful Fender chime. Second, the Celestion G12M-25 Greenback. The problem is that it is only rated at 25 watts. The good news is that no Celestion speaker allows the HRD to retain its Fender chime the way this one does. Third, the Eminence Legend 122 alnico. For the best results, my suggestion is that you use one of these speakers but use either a 12AY7 or a 5751 in V1.

In HRD #1, I've got a GE 12AY7/6072A in V1 and a Reverend Alltone 1250 speaker. In HRD #2, I've got a GE 5751 in V1 and a Celestion G12M-25 Greenback. Both sound great.

Re: any speaker recomendations?

I'm using the C-Rex in my extension cab. Everything Eminence says about them is true. Great for Rock, Blues, Country, Jazz etc and an instant cure for "ice picking" if you are having that problem. Very long break in time though. Don't judge it until that happens but once it does oh yes, oh yes.

The stock Twin speakers you mention are the Jensen C12K's. I absolutely hated them. I don't know why Fender touts them as being a reproduction of the vintage Twin speakers because they don't sound anything like that. Fairly low sensitivity rating, early break up (which should never happen with a Twin) and lacking definition. I swapped them out for a set of Eminence "Texas Heats" and realized right away that the Jensens had actually been hindering the potential of my amp. With the TH's the amp came to life and gave me the clarity, head room and presence that I expect from a Twin Reverb.

It's pretty commonly known that the Eminence Legend series are excellent replacement speakers in Fender combo amps. Particularily the 120 watt V12 model.

That V12 is a great speaker (I've got 7 of them), but I don't think it is a good fit for a Hot Rod Deluxe. The V12 has lots of bass. The HRD has lots of bass. Bad combination.

I don't think the V12 has/produces lot's of bass. It can handle lot's of bass. So it remains warm and balanced when pushed.
