Any TACOMA Love?

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

I've always like the Chiefs. Cool designs and incredible tone. My pastor had a Cedar Top with Mahogany back that he replaced the Steel strings with Nylon...sounded awesome!

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

I have two PK-30's, one Koa back and sides w/ maple top and one that's Koa all around. The former was my first nice acoustic guitar I bought 15 years ago. Extra deep parlor shape, amazingly big piano like sound with newish strings. I saw the all Koa one used at a Guitar Center a couple years ago and had to jump on it, even though I had no practical use for it, and Koa tops aren't as nice as maple top for sound. They also have a wider neck, sort of between a steel and nylon style guitar. Speaking of piano, the piano themes inlays, bridge and headstock are nice. Everything about them is tasteful, they had a "one with nature" sort of aesthetic.

It was a real bummer they went out of business, but I have to admit I never fell in love with their tear drop acoustics. I really wanted to like them for the unconventional looks, but there was just too much upper mids and not enough low end or overall volume produced by that body shape. Their more conventional acoustics are great though, I would buy another five Tacomas before buying a Martin or a Taylor.

BTW, do you always have a shotgun casually leaning against your chair, or is that part of the photo setup?

No, the Remington 1187P is usually beside the head of my bed; along w/the Sig .45. ;)

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

I thought she looked like a Remington–I keep an 870 next to mine ;)

Nice. They're a great platform and beastly to boot. Love shooting it too. Picked it up from "Gunsmoke" in Golden; ex-Golden Police Dept weapon. Was looking at Benelli's at the time and may buy one one day but the Semi-Auto Remy does the job quite well.

I've been very impressed with Remington's quality...I've shot thousands of rounds through mine with minimal cleaning. Only issue ever was a friend of mine who borrowed it said it jammed but its never jammed with me.

The Benelli's are nice too...I don't know why, but I prefer pump to automatic...probably is the sound ;)

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

I've shot mine quite a bit at an indoor range and even took it trap shooting. Never had a failure with it but the barrel def gets hot on her. I've never been a fan of the pump...why give a warning? ;)

Ha! Well, I like a warning...the universal sound of "oh crap" lol I personally don't like indoor ranges...like shooting in the great outdoors :)

But back on topic, for the Koa–how would you rate it? Like, is it similar to Mahogany? I've always been intrigued by Koa because I love the looks of the wood

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

Koa...well...it's just a very full balanced sound...not your sterotypical ringing acoustic "Martin" type Spruce on Mahogany or Rosewood tone by any means but it's a big propulsive sound and the more you dig in the more it gives you in return.

Very interesting...what style of music do you play/play with it?

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

Social Distortion (Ball & Chain), Chili Peppers (Californication), etc. Currently messing with Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" in unison with my Daughter playing it on Uke.

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

I was waiting for that...same thing really. :) I told my Daughter when that song first came out that if I started singing "Stay W/Me" about half way through the chorus I always wound up with "Won't Back Down"...she thought I was crazy and still argues with me over it.

Haha! I've known several people to argue it...but I don't think their argument is valid ;) otherwise I'd be speeding up/slowing down other songs with different lyrics ;)

Re: Any TACOMA Love?

Exactly. It's not my favorite but we were looking for some common ground to play together upon and she was learning Stay With Me so that was the selection. Couldn't talk her into War Pigs on the Uke.

Haha! Why not? lol

I'm working on acoustic covers to Green Day's "Holiday" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams"...hard rock/punk/metal/etc. can definitely be acoustified! :D
