Any thoughts?

Frito's Better Half

Anyone have any thoughts on this amp? I'm looking for something relatively cheap (bout 200), loud, and vintage voiced. I'm borrowing a Blues Junior, but it's one of the custom color ones, and I really would hate myself if something were to happen to it. I'd much rather have something that's my own, so I don't have a real good friend pissed off at me if some drunk trips with a beer.

Kustom QUAD 65DFX Combo
65-Watt Stage Amp

With 65 watts of output power and one 12-inch Celestion™ speaker, the QUAD 65DFX combo is one of Kustom's most popular amplifier models. From shimmering clean tones to extra-thick distortion, the QUAD has what it takes to satisfy the most discriminating players.

Features include two totally separate channels, each with two different preamp modes to nail a wide variety of clean and dirty sounds. It don't look bad, but I would like to hear it first. SS amps are not my first choice. This looks like a modeling amp also as it has 24 digital effects.

Re: Any thoughts?

Yeah, I found all that. I was just wondering if anyone had tried it, or happened to have any other options?

Re: Any thoughts?

Sounds (no pun intended) like it'll serve the purpose, Don't ya think, Dustin.
The thing is if this works out for you, and I truly hope it does, then you can upgrade and unload the Kustom. You just need to get the ball rollin' D, after that, it's gravy. Good luck bro, I'm pullin' for ya all the way.

Peace,

Darrin

Re: Any thoughts?

Hey, thanks Darrin!

I talked to my buddy, and instead of going with the blues junior, He's got a Crate half stack (dunno what model, or what the hell I'd do with that much power) that he's going to let me do a rent to own thing with. I'm happy, it's an amp. If I can't get what I need to get out of the dirty channel, I'll use a pedal on the clean. Problem solved.

Re: Any thoughts?

Heaven forbid! our Beandip, going electric?!

Alternatively you could be like my grunge-mongering friend and use ****in big muff on the drive channel with phasers set to mud.

Good deal D,

I had a Crate GT-60 combo years ago, they're well built & it's gonna do the trick for ya. Knock'em dead!:headbang:

Re: Any thoughts?

I used to have a Kustom KGA-65. Basically the same amp as you posted about. Two channels (dirty & clean) with some built-in effects. 65 watts, solid state, Celestion 12 inch (not sure of exact speaker model), light-weight and portable. Worked well for the combo I was in (drums, bass, guitar, singer).

The effects are ok, not very tweakable. I believe it just had a knob to control the volume of the effects but no parameter adjustments. The effectts were: chorus, reverb, echo, flange, and a couple settings where two of them were combined...like, chorus+reverb, etc.

The clean channel was a bit trebley and had a bright switch. The dirty channel had a gain and master volume as well as a mid-shift button. Usually I'd set the dirty channel with the gain down most of the way and the master volume up over half and use pedals for more distortion if needed. I didn't use the clean channel much.

Each channel had its own 3 band eq and for the most part the amp sounded good in small bars. Especially if the amp was sitting on a chair.

$175 for that amp is a fair price if the condition is very good.
