Just curious to how it sounds for you.
I have an Am Strat with just a JB in the bridge, and I really want to make it more versatile.
I guess i play anything from stuff like Thin Lizzy to Van Halen to Dire Straits to Skynyrd to SRV. I was thinking along the lines of JB/some sort of single coil/Possibly Hot rails. For the middle I'd be leaning toward something that I could get a nice 'dirty','gritty' blues tone.then for the neck something pretty smooth that can really sing.

i have a hss in a hamer.
i use a jb jr neck, lil 59 middle and a 17k c5 in the bridge. it doesnt balance as well as some of my other guitars since the bridge pup is way hotter but i can get a variety of tones with it

I use a pair of APS-2's in my MIJ 62 RI strat along with a Custom Shop Lil Pearly Gates in the bridge. Its a good, balanced sound, but I do miss the bridge/middle notch sound I had when I had 3 singles.

Oh I forgot to mention I have, and will probobly keep a Split/Series/Parallel switch on the JB also!

I have an HSS Strat, currently has an Alnico 2 Pearly Gates/2 Fender Texas Specials. I am thinking of switching to a pair of Fender Fat 50's in the neck and middle, and possibly replacing the magnet in the PG with an A5 (which will make it a Pearly Gates Plus). Either that, or I will replace the PG with a '59.

I reckon that would be pretty nice. I prefer lower output in the neck myself, and it would be nice to have a noiseless in the mid to complement the other two. If it were me, I'd go JB/Vintage Rails/Cool Rails.

OK,

i ended up switching the pickguard from my crappy aria strat copy(lil demon/duck/duck/) into my strat today and I Love the tone!!!

Only little biff(for lack of a better work) I have with it is that I'm finding,at least the neck Pup, to be a little underpowered..I wouldn't mind a bit more power in the neck so as i could get it to "sing" a little more.

I absolutley love the straty quack outta those Duckbuckers So i'm gonna stay with mabye 1 Duck in the Middle.

How would a Cool rails sound in the neck? Would i still have a somewhat of a stratty tone from the Neck on it's own? Would it match well with the Duck in the middle?

Tonal variations that will keep you noodling around with different sounds longer than you actually practice playing something. You got your straight single coil sounds in any variation of parallel or series grouping, and in series each tone control acts only on its resepetive pickup so there are tons of tones available there. Then you can do the humbucker thing with again any variation of parallel or series grouping. Mismatch single coil mode and humbucker mode to throw more tonal changes into the mix.

This is the coolest and most versatile switching arrangement I've ever found. It works just as well on a standard strat setup with one vol and two tones, or a standard Ibanez setup with one vol and one tone. Some of the cool series grouped sounds are not available though as those setups don't allow access to each pup for tone control.

I was doing a simila project.
Update:
I was going to put in a Gibson T-top in the neck, but just changed my mind. I did rewire it a bit, now it has 1 vol, 1 tone, & a splitter switch that only works in the bridge position of the 5-way (the splitter on the tone control seemed to be adding noise in the HC mode). The notch bridge and middle notch tone is very good, since the JB is split by the 5-way mega switch.

So now it's wired with a super switch like this:
1 = Neck SSL-1 (Single coil)
2 = Neck & middle (Hum-canceling)
3 = Neck & JB stud coil (Hum-canceling) (sort of Mustang-y sounding)
4 = JB screw coil & mid (Hum-canceling)
5 = JB Full or split with the splitter switch (Hum-canceling or SC)

I still might try a rails or other HC pickup in the neck slot, we'll see...

Your setup sound pretty cool, hope you like it.

BBB, it's easier than a 5-way for me anymore. Switching combinations is like snapping your fingers, literally. From Neck only to Middle only, from Middle only to Bridge only, and from Neck only to Bridge only is the same finger movement as snapping. Going the opposite way isn't *as* easy but easy still.

It's not too complicated really. Up positions make parallel groupings and down positions make series groupings. In the photo above, the Neck and Bridge are on in parallel.

I've another 540R that I just put the switches in last week. It only has the one stock tone control and I don't plan on doing the the separate tone controls on that one. The vol control is a push-push to split the bridge humbucker and the tone is a push-pull to split the neck and middle pups. This guitar has all 59s like the blue one above.

My Strat has a JB with seris/parallel switch, a Hot Stack in the middle and a lil59 in the neck. It also has a bridge pickup on/off switch so I can combine the JB with the lil59.

Its a great sounding and very versatile guitar.

This might sound odd, since I'm the one that just traded you the CR for the Duck, but the CR is one of my favorite Strat neck pups. The only reason I traded is because I'm on a quest to try out as many different SD pups as I can . . . on a budget. That means swapping when possible.

IMO - the CR isn't particularly "Strat-ish" per se, but it does have a its own unique character that I love. For awhile, I had it mated with a Vintage Rails in the middle. (The VR is virtually the same as a Duck.) They sounded great together, but the CR definitely was stronger than the VR.

I'd love to hear how you like it once you get it in.

I have a MIJ HSS Strat: has two FAT 50's SC (middle and neck) and the DiMarzio Virtual PAF in the bridge wich balance very well with the singles. No split
Same HSS with MIA Strat but two Hot Gold Lace and the Seymour Duncan Blues Saraceno in the bridge. Perfect match too
I can play from SRV, The Police. Skynyrd, to early VH and ac/dc. Very happy with this versatility
And when I need some classic config, I always have the A. Series 50th Anniversary
No more guitars and PU's for me, really :fing2:
