Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

I know you didn't, I was just stating my experience with them. I'm glad you aren't having any issues, because I sure did! Noisy pots, noisy pickup switch, and a not-so-reliable Jackson FR made me sell both models. The ones I had were made in 2002 and 2003 I believe.

I had problems with my Jap Jackson FR also. But I didn't think that the edge trem on my Ibby 540R was any better.

So, I own a cheap Indonesian RG321 with a fixed bridge. a bit of fret dressing and some duncans, and this thing plays better than the expensive guitars I own.

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

I had Japanese RG`s and can say that they are really well made. But, neck is too thin and radius too flat for my taste. Also, that epoxy covered basswood sucked tone like a pro. That`s a shame for such a good craftmanship.

Never liked the korean RG`s though. You can really feel the difference when you take one.

That's odd. The Edge trem on mine is almost perfect. In fact I dunno what I'd improve! The Jackson trem loved to go out of tune from time to time.

Glad that the RG321 works for you. Never tried those but I've read they can be great with some proper mods.

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

I bought the 540R used, and the edge trem was a bit worn. There was nothing I could do to improve it.--So, I gave up on FR type trems completely. I don't miss them.

Well on an Edge you can replace the knife edges..easy to get back to working order, plus the studs that goes into the body needs replacement now and then!
Especially if some fool have adjusted the height of those while having the trem on with full tension(that carves the studs up).
Floyds are easy to maintain...people are just impatient or simply does not know what to do.....(sigh...I have been here too long, this Floyd thing is tiring, gimme all yer Edges and Gotoh's ;) they are wothless, hehe).

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

people who dis the Ibanez because of the thin necks really don't know what the guitar is all about- the necks were meant to be thin. if you want chunky necks, there are other guitar brands to appease you...

i like my Ibanez & other guitars the same...

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

Yeah some of them are build for a special style of playing...very comfy, and very nice guitars..
I have a semi thin neck on one of mine, and I love it.

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

There's one guitar that I like better than the Ibanez RG's and that's the Fender Talons. Which were made by Ibanez anyways.

The Talons were commissioned by Fender to be built by the Fujigen Factory in Japan, which happens to also build the Japanese Ibanezes. They were not actualy made BY Ibanez...

I love the RG's. The RG4xx series from 1986 are by far the best playing guitars I have ever encountered. They have rather Strat-shaped necks, but oiled finishes rather than laquered. The Edge Trem is the only FR Copy that I like, and I actually like the feel better than the OFR. There must be a reason I have 1 RG1xx, 5 RG4xx's, 2 Prolines and 2 RG750s... plus a Roadstar Pro 540S... that's 10 Edge Trems and one Power Rocker...

Fabulous guitars!

I gotta take some pictures...

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

I like some RG's too. I don't own one anymore, but I've owned two in the past and played several more. The first one was an RG470 that was just plain awful. It was all black (I don't like all black guitars) and it sounded very spongy, dark and muddy. I've only had that guitar for about a month and then sold it as quickly as I could. In return, I bought a 1991 RG550 that I loved to death! Punchy, with a sharp attack, great definition, lots of mids, brilliant hardware (gotta love the Edge tremolo!) and fantastic looks. It was finished in coral myst, a metallic dark red finish, with a black pickguard and an all maple neck with matching red headstock. I loved that guitar, but I didn't play it all that much anymore, I play Strats most of the time, so I recently sold it and got a G&L Legacy Special.

It was a great axe though!

hi,i also had the same guitar and sold it a.s.a.p and got an rg550,sweet guitars,i just brought a set of seymour duncans a jb4 and sh2,just got t fit them now and it will be all good.

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

I think that for the most part they're fine guitars. They play very well, and the ones I've tried were well put together. I really have no use for a 24 fret guitar with a double locking trem though.

Point of clarification: Ibanez doesn't build anything. They contract Asian guitar factories to build the guitars they design. That's why they're often built in the same factories as Fender, ESP, etc.

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

My Ibanez RG2570 works great for over 4 or 5 years now...it's still my main fiddle.

I'm just asking myself if a refret should be done...I should play my Yamaha SA2200 more often (sustain is so much better there) but solid body guitars sound kinda cool, too :D

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

If they didnt have pencil thin neck profiles and crap basswood for a body, they would probably be my axe of choice. They are well made axes but, those 2 points kill it for me.

I am not a fan of 24 frets either unless, it only has a single bucker!

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

i used to like my rg until i got my jackson, now i dislike my RG...
neck is too thin imo....

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

i thought they ceased production in japan apart from like J-customs?

either way, jap ibanezes are sweet.

Re: Anybody else love-playing Ibanez RG guitars

If it wern't for the horrible trems in the current ones, I would be a fan. I'm currently looking for a locking trem equipped axe, and have been playing a bunch of RGs, but I just can't get on with the lo pro.
