Anybody ever try a DiMarzio FRED in the neck?

Being that it's basically a mid-juiced up PAF Pro, I'm thinking it could be pretty sweet. What woods does the FRED like?

I've tried it in alder, basswood and ash w/ a maple top.

Its one of my favorite neck pickups (much better than the PAF Pro IMO), its got the clarity and punch of a single coil, with the mids an output of a hot 'bucker. Sounds very similar to a Chopper in the neck if you've heard that, or a cross between a HFH and an Air Norton. It's a very unique sound that's tough to put into words, try it though, you'll love it!

Awesome awesome. Yeah I have a Chopper in the neck of an old Hamer Cali and I really dig it. I like the PAF Pro and I'm a mid junkie so I think this should work out fine. I really like the split tones I've been hearing from the FRED too.

I had it in a maple-capped mahogany SZR520 (which I don't have anymore). I had it paired with a Breed bridge. Originally, I set the Fred as the bridge humbucker but I needed something with more juice, so I put it in the neck. It definately had that thin, single-coil quality about it. It was a tad blurry/edgy, for lack of better terms, slightly reminicent of the PGn that I had, but with less mids. I would say it was a better neck soloist pickup for my needs than the PAF Pro, but the PAF Pro owned it on rhythm. The '59 owned it for leads.

Interesting. I'm planning on it going in a mahog guitar too... What did you end up going with? 59?

Ended up ditching the guitar entirely for playability, but right now I have a '59 and a DDn (SH-6n) in the neck slots of my SZs (also mahogany/maple). The '59 does boomy, throaty leads, and the DDn is more biting, though I raised the poles on the neck two full turns. I would say the '59 is snappier, but fuller and darker than the Fred, whereas the DDn is brighter but not as snappy.

FRED in the neck is amazing. i have a fred/paf pro set and wanted to hear the pro in the bridge spot so i switched them around and actually prefer then this way with the fred in the neck and the pro in the bridge. the fred has a hot single coil tone like a chopper or a hs-3 on steriods.
as a bonus you get some killer harmonics in the neck spot which is unusal.

I loved the Fred in the neck....I wouldn't say it was ever thin, but it's a great pickup for when you need to volume down as it cleans up nicely and in a single coil kinda way...It gets clean, clear, and articulate when you volume down, but yet can still grind very well at full volume on the guitar...Great harmonics! I still love the one I've had in one of my strats bridge spot since the Fred came out...Mine would be a very early one..Seems it's gotten better with age?

I'm not really a Dimarzio guy,but I do use the Fred and the VPAF N pickups..

Great! Thanks very much for all the input. I think this is going to happen.
