Re: Anybody seen or used on of these things?

I have never heard or used this......but it looks like I've seen it somewhere before. Hell it's 20 bucks if you've got what its used for I would just buy it and see what exactly it does and if its good at what it's supposed to do.

Re: Anybody seen or used on of these things?

It sounds like the old Power Soaks that were disigned by the guitarist for Boston - Shultz (?). I think Marshall makes an Attenuater (spell check anyone) that does the same thing. In general these things make good sense but you don't see many people using them for some reason. For 20 bucks though I agree you should check it out and then let us know what you think. :)

Re: Anybody seen or used on of these things?

You do realize that you're only overdriving the preamp with this, right?

This thing is pointless with a master volume amp.

That isn't a Scholtz power soak, those were about 12"x10"x3.5" or so, they were a big power resistor box (lot's of vent holes), with selectable impedances and a tube or solid state amp switch ... I used to use one, did a good job at what it was meant to do BTW. Marshall makes the Power Brake, same idea. That thing in the pic looks like an in-line volume control for a preamp for use in the loop ... like MRID stated.

yep... just get a volume pot and 2 jacks and you have the same thing. its just a volume control... nothing special.

no it is not a power soak, and for the record no noe should EVER use a power soak...Using a Sholtz PS is the fastst way to kill a tube amp next running it w/o a speaker load!

Re: Anybody seen or used on of these things?

theodie, what you are wanting is a Weber mass, or a trainwreck airbrake (Dr. Z also makes an airbrake), or a THD hotplate...these are good attenuators.

Re: Anybody seen or used on of these things?

Pure ****!

Only a kind of master volume put thru the FX loop. Doesnt saturate the power tubes at all.

How do you figure that? Never did mine any harm, nor a couple of other people that I knew that used them (that was the only device at the time around) ... any power attenuator isn't necessarily good for the amp, but playing it flat out isn't either. If power resistors were so bad for amps then the Mesa MK IV wouldn't have a built in one to kill the speaker on it pull for recording/silent mode on the master volume (used slightly different there, but still).

You are the first person, including a few "Tube Gurus", that I´ve ever heard say this.

I´ve used my JCM 800 2204 with a Scholtz Powersoak for years, and have never had problems with either the amp, the speaker, or the soak.

Improperly connected I could understand where you´re coming from. But if used as advertised, I´d really like to know what this statement is based on ;)

+1 -

has your amp got an 'effect loop level' control?

one lead, connecting send and return, use the level to suit your ears ;)

or, fancy a boost? leave a signal booster (seymour duncan, boss, they're everywhere) in the loop. presto.

Yeah, it would be useful with a preamp output/power amp input arrangement, letting you jack your preamp as high as you needed and then cut back to keep from overdriving a processor ... as long as you could still feed the power stage a strong enough signal you'd been fine (e.g. said boosters).
