Anybody try this?

Has anybody taken the bottom flatwork off a strat pickup before? I had a pickup with a broken start wire and I didn't feel like unwinding it so I pushed the magnets from the bottom out through the top until the bottom was free. So I was able to unwind the start wire more and run it through the eyelet and solder it again. So now it's good! I am seriously happy I did not have to spend forever unwinding it and then rewinding it (I planned on using the same wire). Just a heads up in case anybody else has a broken start wire! There's no need to get a rewind if you don't have to! Unfortunately I didn't think to take any pics while it was apart.

Re: Anybody try this?

Just be aware that some strat pickups the rod mags sit right on coil and pushing on them can break the wire inside

I'd say about 90% of strat pickups are like this... The only ones I can think of that aren't are the plastic bobbin ones. To be honest I think the whole breaking a wire thing is kind of a myth. I've never heard of someone actually breaking one by adjusting them. I've read on countless forums of people adjusting them without any problems breaking one. Obviously if something is abused it can, but if you take time and do it carefully I bet you will almost never break a wire.

Now that's quick thinking.

I wouldn't exactly call it "quick" thinking... I unwound about 1k before the idea hit me.

If it is possible how is it a myth? SD themselves dont advocate pushing on the rod mags. It might be overstated but it was just offered as a word of caution.

I'd say it's a myth because when people say that you shouldn't push on the magnets because you can break the wire Most of the time they have never actually broken one themselves by doing that. They are just regurgitating what others have said. Sure SD doesn't recommended doing it but that's most likely because they don't want even the slightest chance of someone ruining their pup. Even if the chance is incredibly low... If they didn't say that they could be liable for a replacement pickup on the chance it breaks.

Re: Anybody try this?

A winder showed the 1964 strat of a client. The client thought it was a good idea to push in the g magnet on a vintage guitar. The client did it while the pickguard was in the guitar.
Outcome: on one pup the bottom came loose and one broke the coil. Not bad - two out of 3 damaged.

Just because you havent broken one doesnt mean others havent. One day a guy came to me with a dead SSL1 that he tried pushing on. Out of curiosity since the pickup was dead anyways I pushed on the others and sort of field stripped the pickup. There is something of a glue on the magnets that makes it a touchy thing to try. Maybe not all use the glue maybe not all use tape to insulate the magnets but it is a risk

Re: Anybody try this?

Well,
Good for you firebirdguy72. Glad it worked out. Clearly Edgecrusher has a point but the stories I hear on the S. Duncan forums are mainly (I want to say always) stories with good outcomes. Especially with folks getting tired of the old stagger moving mags up or down.
I just got and installed a TwangBanger today and the stagger on it was way way better than most. I almost didn't turn it around, but heck, I have the room so I did it anyway. I wonder if people are moving magnets, and I have not heard this before, do the windings have wax on them mostly, or not? If so, a little 5 minute warm up with a hairdryer on medium might make it easier and less likely to have a mag pull on a wire enough to break it. Just a thought.

Do you think the glue had a big role in why it broke? It'd be interesting to see whether or not that was the factor that did it.

Gv is gonna fix my bkp mine for me.

Cool!
