ive had nothing but average to ok experiences with duncans i think they are slightly to overated and have to much marketing. Dimarzios however I prefer them to stay nice and quiet they have a primo sound not so trebly and shrilly like all the artists who i have heard use them. They have blown me away with the tone they get, who cares about the looks or how well they are made isnt the quest for TONE

The only Dmz pickup I had was a Tone Zone, and I gave it away.

Why am I not suprised about this one.....that makes 11 times I've heard this story

I've got a couple HS-3's lying around, going unused.

So do I. I have a really old HS-3. It was made differently than the new ones. It also does Yngwie to a "T". There is a difference between old and new.

Two of my favorite pickups are DiMarzios-the Air Zone and the SDS-1.

The Air Zone is like a reverse EQ'd JB-the mid hump is in the low mids instead of the high mids. It is a great rock pickup and can really smooth out a guitar that is normally bright in the bridge position.

The SDS-1 single coil has a voice all its own, almost like a P90-can make your strat cop a serious LP Junior vibe.

I agree. I had an older HS-3 and though it was okay. I bought one in '98 or so and it sounded very different...really weak and thin by comparision. I thought I was imagining it. What do you perceive the difference as being?

BTW, my experience with PAF Pros and that newer HS-3, along with YJMs (yuck) also made me swear off the DiMarzios...even tried em in multiple axes, no luck.

The double cream issue...LD reminds me of Bill Gates in that respect...but that aside I still don't like the sound.

If you like 'em, use 'em. But I think I'm in the same boat as RG.

Well, I have an old Super Distortion that I've been raving about... maybe that's cuase it's old... hmmm... maybe I should pick me up a new one and put them head to head in a stratocaster dual.

I'm not familiar w/ the "double cream issue." Care to educate me? Sounds kinda like a special edition porno mag.

As far as I know the have the patent to the double cream coils so they are the only ones in the USA that can make pickups with both coils this color. They also own the name PAF so everybody else have to name their pickups like "that amazing great sounding pickups of the fifties, we do this ones exactly like those".

I have to say that really surprises me thay can patent a double coil color. Imagine FORD patenting color RED. Then all FERRARIS will be only yellow!!!

There are a few reasons that I don't use Dmz pickups and the main reasons are fairly simple. For one, SD makes pickups that meet my needs tonally and I have no reason to look elsewhere. Unlike many folks who are still searching for tone, I pretty much have the tone I've been looking for. Lucky me I guess.

The second reason is customer service. SD backs their products and supports their customers like few other companies in or out of the musical gear realm. Many companies have a you bought it, you deal with it attitude. With SD, "I don't like it" is good enough to get an exchange. Try that anywhere else and see what you get.

The third is integrety. It seems that many companies are invoking questionable trademark lawsuits and marketing strageties to sell products instead of relying on solid product development and customer satisfaction to build their customer base. SD sells on their reputation without all the silliness going on in the industry.

Just because I had a TZ in my posession (I surely didn't buy it) doesn't mean I have never heard or played on Dmz products and I have a X2N here waiting to be installed today. I also install EMGs into customers guitar as well as anything else my customers will pay for, usually A.M.A. but hey it's not my place to tell my customers they are completely kooky.

There is nothing inherently wrong or bad with Dmz, EMG, Rios or most other pickups out there, I just know what I like. I surely don't base my opinions strictly on the TZ.

I would definitely agree with you on the questionable trademark thing....I think DM should just drop it. It's hurting them more then it's helping them IMO. People tend to look at Dimarzios for a more "modern" sound usually anyway so not being able to exclusively make double-cream wouldn't hurt their business at all hardly. Nobody is going to buy a Dimarzio just to get double-cream....at least I wouldn't....tone comes FIRST.

However, I think it's silly to judge a pickup company by one or two pickups or even a handful especially with only one guitar. I see alot of blanket statements on this board that are silly at best. They always seem to be the typical DM vs SD type stuff....DM's are muddy, DM's are processed sounding etc.

I pretty much was all SD until I got a Jackson SL1....the JB that came with it was WAY too bright IMO with the setup I had. I tried the Custom, Distortion after coming to the conclusion that it was the prominent upper end that most Duncans have that wasn't jiving with my setup. I needed something in between the output of the Custom Custom and Invader with the treble not so prominent....SD didn't have the pickup I needed. I took a chance and got a Super3 from DM....it was the PERFECT match for that guitar!!

And for my other superstrat with a rosewood fingerboard the JB is the PERFECT match. Both guitars sound different but great...the two pickups complement the wood choices perfectly!!

So what I'm saying is, don't make assumptions or blanket statements(not directed at you Robert), but look at tone charts and descriptions.....they have helped me a lot...I can almost nail the right pickup for the job the first time now on a new guitar.

And just as a sidenote...doesn't DM have the same exchange policy that SD has?? Or have they changed it??

I don't know if Dmz has an exchange policy or not and the customer service issue was meant to span not only pickup manufacturers but amps and automobiles as well. Few companies out there offer a direct exchange policy, no questions asked.

The trademark issue not only applies to the double cream issue but also to such things as lipstick pickups and guitar body shapes, ect. The last couple of years have been interesting to watch as some companies try to protect and build market share. Some of the issues have been valid and some have been seemingly less valid. SD for the most part has stayed away from such controversy but you never know what will happen in the future. As a whole though SD sells pickups on their own merit and not by using lawyers and questionable marketing.
