anyone ever play a fretless guitar?

i've always been intrigued by them, i always wanted a fret less guitar with the hole for the frets on the fretboard but filled in with soemthing. so it's stilll fretless but it has the fret holes filled. thought it would be pretty cool wqith a maple/maple neck. i think i may get a warmoth strat and try that. seesm pretty cool.

what do you guys think?

I've played a fretless bass before. Fretless instruments are different in that you have to play right where the fret would be or it will be sharp or flat depending on if your a little to the right or left.

Wow i have never heard of a fretless guitar before. Man you would have to be an amazing guitar player and know your guitar through and through to pull that off.

Ive played my mates fretless bass, im not sure if id want it on guitar but it works beautifully on bass, some awesome sounding slides.

i've seen shawn lane and ron thal use them and it looked awesome, not to mention steve vai with his 3 neck guitar: 1 fretless with frets filled in, 1 6 string, and one 12 string. that is freakin awesme right there!!

i've read that you have to buy an actual guitar that was built to be fretless because there is more difference beetween fretted and fretless guitars thatn just the fretts and strings.

I never played one, but I've always wanted to try one out.

This Tim Donahue guy is pretty amazing. He's the son of an acquaintance of mine. He not only plays them well, but he builds fretless guitars too!

He's gained some popularity in Japan and some European countries - but, not much in the states.

Ron Thal and Shawn Lane are awesome on their Vigier fretless guitars.

I met both of them at musiclive2000, and played the Vigier guitars. They're really hard to play... but there's so much you can do with them!

Godin makes a 9 string classical fretless axe. You might want to try one of those out first to see if you like the feel.
