Anyone gig with a small combo??

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

So I am still leaning towards a Trademark 30.. what is the equivilant of 30w SS into tube watts? (And what is the general level of tube wattage people think is required for smaller shows? some people here said 12w is fine, others say you need 60+)

I dunno. blah.

30w SS is roughly equivalent to about 10w tube.

You know, for the price you're looking at spending on this Trademark you could probably score a nice used Fender tube combo...

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

Not a fan of fender tube combos at all.. None under $800+ have ever sounded that good to me. And it wont cover the variety of styles I would want it to, Wouldnt have XLR out to a PA like the TM30, and wouldnt be light.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

Still think the TM60 would be better, if you use it for gigs, I feel it's always better to have more amp, just in case the house PA is lame. I also feel 12" speakers are what's needed for good amp tone in case you have to play un-mic'd. Or ya could get the TM 30 and carry a single 12" cab with a good speaker. I played a bunch of Fender combos, the Trademark is way more versatile.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

Im thinking a TM30 is better, much lighter(difference of like 20 lbs or so I think, and $400) and as you said, if I absolutely need the extra power I already have my 12" extension cab with a V30 (which is also quite light.. around 20 lbs I think)

ahhh, V30 ext cab...perfect. Closed back even better, only bummer with the Techs is ya lose the amp speaker when ya plug in a ext cab...my TM 60 sounded real good through my 4-12 cab.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

I use my 15W Blues Junior, with descent tubes and a G12H30 speaker this amp sounds great. I run the amp clean with a little bit of grit and use pedals for my od/distortion tones, the Tonebone Hollywood works awesome with this amp!

Here is a shot of my new Pine cab!

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

nice! deeper than stock?

its pretty close to stock just a tad deeper but i think it sounds better than the stock cab which is probably particle board, the Pine cab seems to warm up the tone a bit the low end sounds a bit better as well as the high end which is not harsh!.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

cool. im a big fan of an uncovered finger jointed pine box, few things sound as sweet

I'll be gigging with it tomorrow night again there are no decals at all on the amp so no one has a clue what it is, I got a lot of compliments on the amp last week at a gig!

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

I use my Mesa Stiletto Ace 1X12 combo for smaller gigs. It sounds great. Not exactly a small & light 1X12 combo though. The other guitar player uses his Dual Recto 1/2 stack, and comments on how loud and cutting the Stiletto sounds. Must be the EL34's.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

That's what I use, except I have the 1x10. Didn't have a chance to gig with it yet, but I have played it at gig volume with a drummer, and it kills. I am also considering the 2x12.

I drag my Mesa F-30 with me on once in a while to jam with my brother-in-law. It sounds so good that I think I run it louder than my half stack.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

The TM's are a great suggestion. I have had really good luck running my old PV classic 30 on many gigs. We even recorded some of them and the tone was really good. So yes, small combo's work fine for probably most gigs really. I did lean mine back on a tilt stand which helped me hear it better.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

I've seen guys gigging with Peavey Classic 30s on chairs, and mic'd up through a decent PA they sound huge.

Of course, there's the other side of that coin, like the tiny scrungy dive bar I'm playing tomorrow night, where the only thing that sees a mic all night are the vocals. A 1x12 combo is gonna disappear completely.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

I've pretty much settled on two things.. Either a Behringer GM110 for cheap (under 100) if I can find one, or a Laney LC15. It sucks the Laney doesnt have an XLR out like the Behringer does, cause that would be awesome.

Hmm hopefully that'll be alright.

Thus your orange colored obelisk.

I have seen a few people hit the bars with peavey classic thirties. Of course, these are all student bars, where you gotta be able to hear yourself speak while the band plays, but they sound awesome.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

I used to play a lot of shows with a Spider 112, 50 watts. It's more than enough for what I needed at the time.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

Never played a Behringer but those are considered more of a low-end amp, that one sounds like a practice amp....ya sure ya wanna gig with that? I gigged with my Classic 30 a lot, had to mic it but it sounded great with an old Celestion innit....stock speaker was mud. Had a V30 in a single 12 cab to beef it up nicely. Now just because I drag my 4 12 cab to a smaller gig, does'nt mean I have to play it loud, it really has this tone and feel I can't get from a combo...so it follows me, dig it.

Re: Anyone gig with a small combo??

I ended up buying a Laney LC15, its a 15w tube amp that apparently sounds really good (lots of reviews on hc are actually positive!) Its really light too, 24 lbs or so.. The only thing that kinda sucks, is I cant plug it direct XLR into a PA so I'll have to buy a SM-57 or something, but eh least it has an ext cab jack (which I have a 1x12 ext with a V30)

Spent abit more than I wanted (250 US shipped, so another 50 or so from customs probably) but least the resale value is pretty decent on them, I just seen one sell locally for 300 cad so I can get back close to what I paid if I dont dig it.
