I concur with GuitarGuy503. You might think about a Line 6 Spider. Tom Dowd (the engineer who recorded the Allman Brothers, among others) believed that tone changed within the tube itself in a matter of hours once you were using them. SS circuitry eliminates that. I have a Fender 75 which is a tube amp from the 80's, and while it's a great amp, I don't use it much anymore, because it's not very consistent. My Spider, on the other hand, gets used on all small jobs. Just a thought, I guess.
If you're still wanting a tube amp, if you can find some older Music Man amps, those do quite well. They made a 212 50 watt version that was very nice. Not a spectacular overdrive channel, but their clean channel was great, very sparkly.

i dont really buy into this tube tone changing so quickly idea....it could be very well true (the idea that a tube changes just within a few hours of use) but ive not noticed a change in sound of any of my tube amps after many hours of use....of course once the tubes life comes to an end, the deterioration in tone and volume is very noticable..... but then comes a tube change and you get another year or 2 of good tubes

I've never been able to detect it either, that's just what he believed. He was also a firm advocate of digital recording when everyone else was still desparately clinging to analog tape.

as a conneseur of distortion, i'll hafta dissagree. See, with a fender, with the drive all the way up, and more drive on, you get like toxic doses of crunch, which you jsut can't get with pedals. But growl? pshh, take your pick, most od pedals were meant to growl

then again, i use many types of drive in a given day

Not to incite a flame war here, but to my tastes the Hot Rods are too muddy in the distortion channel.

Sure you can get just about any distortion tone you want out of a pedal... but I was trying to differentiate how the Reverberocket's dirty channel would differentiate from others, SANS pedal. Some of them crunch (Marshall), some growl (Ampeg), and some fart (Hot Rod). (Just kidding, Hot Rod fans! I know you all have a sense of humor...) I'll admit that the Hot Rod's clean is awesome, its drive channel just isn't to my taste (even though it goes to 12!).

FWIW, Peter Frampton's secret weapon is a vintage Reverberocket...
