I don't know how many EMG fans there are around here, so I'm not looking to get flamed, haha. But has anyone tried this set? Opinions?

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

I had the Luke set in my Ernie Ball Luke.

Yes for most rock styles but def NO for anything else.

You can't split the 85 so position 2 is terrible and there's not enough " smoke " in EMG singles to do a nice blues.

Got rid of the guitar after 3 months and bought a Silhouette Special that now has a JB and 2 x Kinman singles... that will cover any style :friday:

Cool, man. Thanks for the advice!

I liked the set very much and used it in a few guitars.

Listen for yourself (you have to watch it on youtube, embedding isn't allowed)

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

I disagree. It all depends on your amp setting, how you tweak the pickup heights and whether or not you like emg active pickups. No emgs aren't splitable, but they don't hiss, hum or cause inference either. You either love um or hate um. I like SD pickups, but not real pleased with the hotter pickups like the JB, Distortion or Invader. I think their Antiquities and vintage voiced pickups are the best things going.

There's a fix for the #2 position but not compatible with the solderless kits - if you have a 4 pole switch its easy. Google "MK mod" EMG. Should work for Blackouts too/

Or just buy an 89.

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

You could use the 89, but I think you would want to use the 89R so that the coil farthest from the bridge is used in single coil mode. No direct experience with the pickup, but I've been told the 89 and 85 do not sound similar when the 89 is in humbucker mode.

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

I had an 89R in my Luke before i sold it.

Position 2 is important to me and it was still crap !

The other thing is that they don't auto split.. you have to use a push pull pot.

It sounds very much like an 85. They even advertise it as such. And I agree about the R version, although I've only used the regular 89.
Featuring two pickups in one, the 89 is loaded with alnico V magnets and has separate preamps each providing custom outputs for both dual coil and single coil modes. In dual coil mode, the sound is rich, warm and powerful, but still very clear and is similar to the 85. The single coil mode, accessed via the included push pull pot, delivers the traditional Strat single coil sound: bright, airy, and chimey, and is similar to our SA.

It's two different outputs on the pickup. You have to switch between them, but you could probably do it with a Super Switch if you wanted to.

For what it's worth, I think the 89R splits well with an SA in the middle. It's not vintage Strat, not by a damn sight, but it gives you some of the flavor.

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

I have one EMG-SLV pickup. I have tested it in a couple of guitars. I agree with Jessie that the EMG gives "some of the flavor" but I can also understand why, for wolf, some is not enough. I like the pickup but I cannot imagine a set of them displacing the Ant II Surfers in my Fender AVRI '62 any time soon.

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

I haven't use the SL Set per se, but I have used SAs, 85s, 89s, and 81s. ina number of guitars. They're awesome. They can be used for anything and are as versatile as your imagination can be. I'm using a set of SAs in a Strat right now that gets decent quack without any hiss or noise.

They don't sound as crisp as the True Velvets in one of my other Strats, but I can get some great twang out of them.

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

Great choice for breathing life into a stock guitar with lame pickups. These are great sounding set and worth the upgrade, super easy install too. Not for everyone but a fire breather! I'm very satisfied. My Mexi strat blows away others guitars that are three times the price. I also added a steel block, locking tuners and, titanium saddles.

Zombie thread uprising almost in time for Halloween! lol

I actually tried this set and did not care for it at all–to each his/her own. Very sterile and too clear sounding for my tastes–but sounded great when another guitar player tried it.

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

I hear these sterile comments all the time about all pickups mfg's, but only from the tone deaf!lol! tone is ultimately in your fingers. Yes, to each his own. this set is a bargain and sounds incredible.

Re: Anyone here ever tried the EMG SL20 Steve Lukather set?

they sound and feel like emgs. some people like that, others dont. i used emgs for years but stopped a long time ago. still have an old sv/sv/81 set with spc and pa2 that i need to get rid of at some point
