Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

I love the hell out of my LTD Viper-300. I bought it used as a cheap beater when I went to college, but its kind of grown with me over the years. Its now far more me than it is LTD (I've changed out everything but the wood & finish). Its by far my most played guitar these days.

My #1 guitar (Gibbo SG) i got in 2007 for $500.00 used with HC Case.

I added a Duncan A2P set, and can not be happier with this guitar.

I am looking out for an all-mahog 300 right now.

Cheap guitars can be wolves in sheep's clothing. Enjoy your's I like mine.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

I have 3 guitars head and shoulders above the rest; a California Fat Strat, an Am Deluxe Ash Strat, and a MIM Strat. My Dad has a theory that I love the MIM so much because it was my first "proper" guitar, and it holds sentimental value, but I disagree, it's just a killer guitar. Honestly, you can totally see where the price difference is, but in terms of turning up to a gig, plugging in and playing, the MIM would be right at the front of the queue.

With cheaper guitars, you do have to find the right one. But Squier Classic Vibes these days have completely changed the way I look at cheaper guitars.

My "spare" guitar isn't super cheap, but... when I bought my Schecter, I was fully intent on using it as a backup, but it actually plays and sounds as good as, if not BETTER than my Les Paul. I'm pretty happy with it.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

I always try and keep my not very expensive guitar in sight when I'm gigging but it wasn't so long ago I let my attention drift only to find that some drunken idiot had strapped my guitar on and was posing for the amusement of his friends. I politely explained to him that I am the only drunken idiot that gets to handle my guitars.

If I'd paid thousands for the guitar I'd never be able to relax at gigs.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

all of my guitars are cheap (depends on what you define cheap really)... i'm not willing to give more than 500 for a guitar... my main baby is a 2007 vintage modified stratocaster completely stock... those duncan sc 101 pups really sound amazing... i have a fender modern player marauder and a knockoff strat as well but the squier kills them both... i don't think there is shame in preferring a cheaper guitar... everyone puts me down when they see my squier and when i play it they say i should get something else... then i play my marauder in d drop and they shut up... but soundwise my strat is my fave guitar... people ask why i play such a cheap instrument and i answer that it's because i feel this guitar has a real soul... anyone who feels something special in a guitar shouldn't hide it...

a friend of mine that i had a band with had an old 1970's aria 1802t her uncle had left her lying in a corner... i asked her why she had such a cool looking guitar lying in a corner and she said "cause it's only worth 150 bucks" i asked her if i could play it and that thing just blew me away... i didn't bother asking to buy it cause her uncle wanted her to keep it... i only had the knockoff strat at the time so i used the knockoff as a main guitar (i didn't have any other guitar at the time) and the aria as my drop d... if i could find one used i would buy it in a heartbeat

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

I LOVE to play my Hwy1 Strat. I wouldn't say it's my main guitar, but it shares the spotlight with guitars many times it's price.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

I guess my Korina SE would count over here, as it's the one on the floor stand and has the lead plugged into. In the UK though, it would now be my MIM Strat I got over Christmas - main reason being is it's the most accessible one there.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

My main player lately has been my LTD EC-300. I still say ESP/LTD makes the best "bang for the buck" guitars out there. I've never run across a bad one.

If someone did that at one of my gigs, I'd have a hard time not decking them. Even if I didn't deck him, I'd probably try to get him thrown out.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

apparently my last post didnt take cuz my comp froze.. I used to play out (church) with my Squier Strat ($120) Said Squier in small black and STRAT in big black on the headstock.. ( removed easily with acetone) Of course it was pretty heavily modded. I have a Japanese Strat that I wouldnt hesitate to gig with.

Abscent forum bro Rand-o-monium has a couple of top notch axes, but normally gigs with lower line stuff and he kicks arse when he plays.. and doesnt have to worry so much about theft and spilled beverages and such

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

I wanted to clarify my original post., after reading it again.

I own 3 guitars currently and have to limit myself financially in recent years due to an addition to the family, medical bills, and the purchase of a home..thus no more top shelf priced guitars. Despite my feelings towards alot of "aftordable" gear, the fact remains it is, for now, a necessity

My latest purchase which cost me 4 bills, ousted my other two guitars which cost me 2.5 and 3 times as much once they were upgraded as I needed to. And that new guitar I would not trade back for the majority of high end guitars I have owned...maybe one or two. Hence my comment about mojo and $ spent.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

Just reminds me that what matters is how good a guitar is, not how good it should be.

This. I've been searching for the right Ernie Ball JP MusicMan for awhile now. I've played a couple at different guitar centers, but they only ever have one each at most, and I'm never impressed by it off the shelf (and guitars certainly CAN impress you right off the shelf).

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

Yes, mine are all cheap but I go thru them & get a much improved sound. Last open mic played my Peavey Reactor.

Re: Anyone here rocking cheap guitars as main players?

I never listen to what any of those idiots at Guitar Center say. My 2 guitars are both Chinese made and IMO, get the job done. They are a ESP LTD Viper 100-FM and a Squier Standard Strat which has a Cherryburst finish. Some of those lowerpriced guitars which are out on the market today, aren't that bad. It's the player that makes the guitar sound good, remember that.

I am not from the States, but i did get some GREAT advice from the gentleman working in the Guitar Center (acoustic department) in San Fransisco.

He was extremely clue'd up, and on the ball.
He deff knew his Martin HD28 from his D28 from his HD28V and what not.
We chatted for atleast 30min, and not once did i feel he was doign it to make a sale !

I was very impressed and left the store with some great, long lasting knowladge/info.
