Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

Re: Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

I'm not following you. You say you like concentrics, but then say you drill holes to get 2 volumes and 2 tones. Which is it?

I mean it's easier to rewire for two concentrics and then drill two small holes for coil split switches, than it is to rerout a guitar with a small wiring cavity for two volume and two tone. Either way I want coil splits and 2 volume and 2 tones but I prefer doing the easier thing (two concentric pots and two coil split switches) over the hard thing (2 push pull volume pots and 2 regular tone pots).

Welcome to the forum.

they aren't bad. i had one on a nashville power telecaster. one knob was master volume for the piezo, the other knob was a concentric and was volume and tone for the pickups. it was a little tall, but worked just fine. i can definitely see it working great for a guitar with tons of options. looks like a pain to wire up though haha
Wiring diagrams of all sorts are available from www.stewmac.com, and yes, it does get involved, but I think the overall gain is worth the time. But that's just me.

I use concentrics often and they are easier to wire than separate pots - though I normally wouldn't bother to tell someone who hasn't logged into the forum in over a year. :7:

Just out of curiosity... what kind of guitar are we talking about?

I have some HH Teles with two knobs in which I face this sort of issue, but I can't bring myself to drill holes in them, as I can't undo the damage if I decide I don't like them.

Re: Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

Thank you for posting this. I am about to use a concentric pot for tone only on a Tele that has a 4-way switch. That way, position 2 and 4 will have a way to adjust each pickup when both are 'on' together. I'm surprised it is not a common stock feature... it would sell a lot of guitars

Re: Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

As soon as you get used to one knob spinning the wrong way, they are fine. I put one on my Charvel 88 so I could add a tone knob. Does the job without having to make holes.

Re: Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

If you have a concentric and one knob spins the wrong way, I believe you've wired something backwards. All mine spin the same direction.

Re: Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

I've used them, but never really quite sold on them. I'll be taking them out of my Strat copy, as they're too deep, and putting them to one side, though I'd never gotten around to buying knobs, as they were an import job the last time I looked. Long shaft is expensive, this side of the pond at least.

Re: Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

They get the job done. I try to stack less used controls so primary controls aren't stacked... Ie I'll put a tone on top of a spin a split because neither gets moved a lot.

I have a nice washburn that I use concentric knobs on since I wanted full vvtt controls. Took a little getting used to but I wouldn't go back

Buddy has a Washburn with series/parallel blend stacked with vol. Really great effect, but wish it wasn't on the volume, too much going on in one space for me.

Re: Anyone Like Concentric Knobs?

I have one on my bass. It has active pickups... the inner knob is treble and the outer is bass. Pretty handy for that. I could see using one for other things, but to be honest I’m a speed knob fan and the knob sets I’ve seen for concentrics aren’t very appealing to me.

I know... dumb reason, but I’ve never hidden the fact that, when it comes to guitars, I’m a sucker for a pretty face!
