Re: Anyone like John Suhr pickups?
When I first wired the Suhr Aldrich, I was expecting a lot...:
A very high output FAT, really THICK sounding humbucker with lots of sweet warm pouring lower midrange and smooth treble response with tight bass, screaming harmonics and sustain for days.
Then I plugged in and what I got is....:
A single-coil sounding high-output humbucker (similar to the Steve Morse Dimarzio bridge pickup in that sense) with lots of higher midrange, absence of lower mids or any thickness, a terrible vocal AWW response, oddly chopped treble in a means to smooth the high-end, a clanky pick attack that compresses and sounds weird when I solo (which is 99.9% of the time).
For my needs as a shredder 99.9% lead player, the Suhr Aldrich is certainly not adequate, but I can see many rhythm players loving this pickup because of its tightness and seemless immunity to any amount of gain you throw at it. It's clearer than any EMG I've tried and it feels stiffer than anything else I've tried in my life, except possibly the Duncan Distortion, which is also very stiff to me.
Very werid EQ on this pickup, somewhat like the Duncan JB, with lots of high-mids but a gaping hole in the lower mids that sounds empty and hollow. Indeed, the Aldrich reminds me of a more powerful, much tighter and smoother Duncan JB, but it doesn't FEEL as good as the JB, its too stiff.
So how do you really feel about them? *lol* You`re probably the first person i`ve seen that reacted that way about Suhr. Maybe there was something wrong with the pup...highly doubtful but there is always a chance.
