Anyone tried JJ 5751s?

Re: Anyone tried JJ 5751s?

Most often I put one in V1 to tame excessive gain. In one amp I put two in, V1 and V2 with good results. My objective is always the same: reduce and smooth out the gain and fizziness in the OD channel of a 2 channel (switching) amp.

JJ and Sovtek. Yuck. Personally, I think just about anything old stock is better. You can find a NOS or good UOS GE or Sylvania for under 30 bucks. Probably under 20. Sometimes you can steal them for real cheap when they are put up for auction with a low starting bid. Also, usually better deals in pairs or small lots if you need more than one. There are more highly regarded 5751's than the GE's or later production Sylvanias but I think these are much better than the current production "5751's" regardless.

i tend to agree. the new 5751 tubes ive tried sound like lackluster 12ax7 and i question if they are actually 5751 tubes so i get nos cause they are relatively cheap

Yup.

Find some old JAN 5751s. Easy to source, not terribly expensive and they sound very good..

From what I can gather, they aren't purpose built but rather just "weak" 12AX7's and are all over the place in terms of gain.

Try JJ's ECC803S. It's a whole different thing than the ECC83S. The 803 is a long plate tube that's nowhere near as dark as the 83 and has a magical midrange.

I have some. I'm talking specifically about the 5751's.

Yup that seems to be the case. I had a silver series groove tube "5751"-research shows its a groove tube spec mullard 12ax7 copy that did not make the grade for gain levels, and they relabled them as 5751s.

That said,it was a nice PI.

That also said, the GT 5751 did not sound like my old JAN 5751s at all. The JANs are much smoother, sweeter, and brighter.

Re: Anyone tried JJ 5751s?

Ah, I took the beginning of your post to mean the brands in general.

No problem. Things get lost in writing and probably my fault. Just as an example, I've got an RCA in V1 in a Marshall copy with a JJ in V2 and a Sovtek LPS in the PI slot, and Svetlana EL34's right now. I can usually find something that's current production that I am just fine with. Really, I'm just glad that there are companies like JJ, New Sensor and the Chinese, that are making them today.

Are those Svetlanas the old Svetlana Electron Devices (SED/Winged C) tubes or New Sensor Svetlanas?

I have an RCA in a box that I was using for a while but I realized that it's not New Old Stock but just Old. It's a bit weak compared to all the new production stuff I have.

Definitely give the JJ 803 a try. It's really sweet.

Re: Anyone tried JJ 5751s?

I have a matched pair of winged C's in my stock but the 34's in the amp at present are the not very popular New Sensor "Svetlana's". I don't get to open the amp up much so the master volume is down and it's pretty much all in the pre-amp tubes and PI for that amp. Just about every current production 12ax7 has been rolled in and out of the amp as well as some of my vintage tubes. Among my vintage tubes are half a dozen RCA gray plates that are indeed NOS. I have a few 12ax7's that are reserved for home audio stuff and a couple of those that were rolled in may have been slightly better than the RCA in V1, but none of the current production stuff beats it, including the JJ 803S. Of the recent production stuff, one exception may have been an EI ECC83. I have 4 of the EI's and the one I tried was slightly microphonic so I pulled it. It's a shame that EI couldn't get their act together, they had some good tubes ... unfortunately, with high failure rates. I liked the early reissue Svetlana 12ax7's as well but they hummed pretty bad with ac powering the filaments. I think I ended up with a JJ 803 in V2 (but it might be an JJ 83)

At any rate, the New Sensor Svetlana 34's are all about the midrange and I actually like them OK. But it doesn't make a whole bunch of difference in that amp when it's throttled down with the master volume. One thing about them though is that I had a hell of a time finding a pair that was matched acceptably close, including a pair from a reputable tube seller (he admitted to botching the matching on the first pair he sent me). For more well balanced, I really like the TAD/Ruby STR/Valve Art/Shuguang EL34B.

Believe it or not the new Svetlana EL34s seem to have passed the TGP Crystal Lettuce Haunting Mids test. LOL

I haven't seen the threads at TGP but getting a thumbs up for their mids doesn't surprise me. I think they got a bad rep. for not being sonic copies of the Winged C and the reputation just stuck. Like everything else, some players will like them and some wont and they'll probably suit some amps better than others.

I wish I had money. I feel like changing things up with my big amp that has JJ 6CA7s and the Svetlana EL34s have been on my radar.

Re: Anyone tried JJ 5751s?

Wouldn't be my choice but you cant get much cheaper than the factory matched, late break-up hard/blue Svets. They are always 30 bucks for a pair at the big online dealers like MF. Softs and Mediums are more and probably not worth the risk of factory matching. But, I fairly recently had a poorly matched pair of Ruby's delivered and the store took them back, no questions asked. I think it was WW&BW.

Re: Anyone tried JJ 5751s?

This thread has officially been derailed. Now the conversation is Svetlana power tubes instead of JJ preamp tubes.

That's what forums are for, right?

Hey, at least we didn't go all poly vs nitro.
