Re: Anyone tried te Wilde L-90 pickups?
The L-90s are great pickups. I have had them in two different guitars and they were exactly what I was looking for. They have a wider range similar to what a PAF is like but a lot more clear than the PAF style pickups I have tried. Bill Lawrence designs his pickups to be clear sounding, and they deliver.
The L-90s have very low string pull which allows for that clarity. As far as going from 6H to 8H you aren't going to hear that big of a difference, but the concept is that the higher the H value the more treble that is reduced. I had 6H models in the bridge of guitars that I mentioned above and they were plenty hot to do hard rock.
Regarding the L-500s, they have a very focused sound and are tighter. The L-500XL reminded me quite a bit of the EMG 81 but with a passive feel. The L-90 is definitely more vintage in feel and sound, they are warmer sounding than the L-500. I like both models, but the L-90 fits my style - vintage feel with muscle. If you were to do a set, I really feel that the 2.8H model would be better. I had 4H models in the neck and they were just a bit too bassy for me; they were still very clear, but for a mahogany/maple body I really feel that the 2.8H would be a better suit.
The L-90 is my absolute favorite humbucker!
