Anyone tried the EMG 57/66 set yet?

Re: Anyone tried the EMG 57/66 set yet?

Actually, rumor has it (again, RUMOR) that these were supposed to be the Dave Mustaine EMGs if Mustaine didn't resign his contract with Duncan. Therefore they're probably built to approximate the JB/Jazz set tonally, which his Livewires are basically an active JB/Jazz set.

Anybody who's used them... How JB/Jazz-like are they?

Re: Anyone tried the EMG 57/66 set yet?

I just got done installing the 57/66 set into my Washburn Idol HM this weekend, along with a new EMG "JH" (James Hetfield) bridge into my #1 Jackson Rhoads. I need to finish the setup on both and put some new tubes in my amp, but, hopefully, I'll be able to chime in with some first-hand observations next week.

By the way, I, too, came across the rumor that the 57/66 started life as Dave Mustaine's signature set in anticipation that he planned to sign with EMG after his Duncan endorsement expired. However, I've researched the hell out of these and found absolutely nothing to substantiate that claim.

Personally, I've been curious to know if what eventually became the 57/66 were among the 20+ prototypes that James Hetfield dismissed in choosing his "JH" set? Maybe one set became a fave with the EMG guys and they simply delayed the pickups' introduction in order to promote the JH series? :scratchch

i inquired on the ESP forum about this too. i was told they have much more of an "organic" "juicy" feel than the rest of the EMG's... they're basically a better attempt to take a step toward passive tone than the X series was.

Yeah they seem like a prime candidate for my buddy's new axe but there's just not enough info about em to justify picking up a set. I know Richie Faulkner and Andy James both use them.

Re: Anyone tried the EMG 57/66 set yet?

EMG 57 sounds killer in a all mahogany, ebony fretboard, 25.5" scale guitar. It retains the EMG vibe of clarity and tightness and at the same time adds warmth and an overall rounded tone.

The rough description of EMG 57 is the tone of an EMG 81 made substantially fat and a bit more than slightly mellow. In passive terms the EMG 57 sounds like a SH-14 Custom 5 with an active preamp added, well roughly speaking in the ball park of tone.

Oh lord... These flew under the radar.
Yeah, exactly. You can tell the 90s are over. Their pickups went so much out of fashion, I almost feel sorry for EMG. I think it's nice of them to try to keep their head above the water and not just wait until bankrupcy.
Not that I'm shopping for EMGs anytime soon, because it's Duncans time for me. But still it would be nice to hear some clips and read user opinions about the 57/66. What I've heard so far, wasn't exactly promising.

Wow, where did those opinions originate?

Re: Anyone tried the EMG 57/66 set yet?

I guess I haven't managed to express myself clearly, sir. What I meant was that I have not yet heard a single clip of the new pickups that would give me goosebumps ;)

Re: Anyone tried the EMG 57/66 set yet?

I currently have an 85 and a 60A in the neck and bridge (respectively) of my EC1000. The 57/66 has definitely piqued my curiosity. These, along with the rest of the Metalworks stuff, looks pretty cool if nothing else.

I eagerly await masta'c's evaluation.

Uhm, aftermarket-wise install kits, maybe... but all those LTDs and Schecters all the teenagers are getting for birthdays and christmases, seemingly more often than squier strats even?? WAY more EMGs stock than Duncans there. And like never before, lotsa models have them, not just $1500+ ESP Standards like it was at the end of the 90s.

^^ Indeed.

Detect a fair bit of Joe Satriani influence.

I'm not going to lie, those do sound pretty darn sweet. Besides his playing being obviously influenced by Satch they do that sort of DiMarzio-esque tone really well.

Another video from Andy James, they sound very, very nice, I particularly like the neck tone, very sweet....
