Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

I figure someone on hear must. How do they hold up? I hear the they sound pretty good. I generally use the Svet Winged C but I see the TS tubes for 25-30 less for a quad so I figure I might give those a shot if they are durable. I guess the Mullard RI's are worth considering as well.

Re: Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

Well I am using Mullards in my new Splawn, and they sound pretty good: but they also have a reputation for being short-lived. I'm dreading the day when I have to gather my nuts and replace them with a matched pair of Tungs. But that's what's next on my list of must-tries nevertheless.

I need to learn to bias this sucker.

Re: Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

Well they're relatively cheap tubes pricewise so I think I am going to give them a shot when I do maintenance this month. I have heard nothing but good tonewise.

Is the Splawn difficult to bias, I don't know a thing about them short of Twilight Odyssey having one. At the gig the other night my buddy **** near stepped on his nuts when he saw Ben's Splawn, I was howling!

Well now you know me having one too beeeeooootch!!! :lmao:

I know I'll probably have to take some time with the tube swap. If I'm not mistaken, the trim pot is INSIDE the chassis...which means actually physically removing it from the headbox (oh GREAT :smack: )

The only thing about biasing I've yet to learn is how to connect my leads from the multimeter, really. I know I'll probably need to have a tech show me eventually, which will cost more cash than I'd like: but hey, life sux.:banghead:

Re: Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

Are those rebranded Shuguang EL34B? If yes, they are far and away my favorite new 34 offering. Big, round, open, roar. I have them in several heads, and all of em sound great with them.

Re: Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

I don't know for sure but I have heard good things about the Shuguang as well. The Tung Sols seem to get straight A's with the Shuguangs not too far behind. Maybe it's just the funny name???

Re: Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

I have a set of these (Tsol) aside but never used 'em...

As for the shugugans, I really liked 'em in my amp. I'd be bummed if they were the same though, I paid a lot more for the TSol pair than I did for the Shu...

Re: Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

The Tung-Sols are not the same as far as I know. The TS are made in Russia while the Shuguang are Chinese. I'm using the Shuguang currently and have been happy with them in the past. I'd like to try the Tung-Sols but I've heard they won't stand up to the plate voltage of my Bogner Ecstasy (540vdc)

Korovamilkdud: Sorry to say the Mullards I had in my Splawn Quickrod were indeed very short lived. They gave up after six months of band practice, with no gigs. The amp sounded horrible so I checked the bias and one of the tubes showed no voltage. Buy a set of bias probes and a good meter, you'll be surprised how easy it is to bias an amp! I can help you thru the process if you need it. After the Mullards I ran the Shuguang in my Quickrod and really liked the tone!

Another plus: The Shuguang EL34b's are very cheap, one of the cheapest you can buy. I've spent way more on the latest "tube of the moment" only to be disappointed by the hype!

Just my opinon!

I remember that thread from awhile back. I'm not planning on stick with the Mullards for the haul. They'll get me by in the next few month, but I want to try a couple other ones too. You're not the only one to mention the Shoe Gang either so I might get to trying those too.:approve:

Re: Anyone using the Tungsol EL34B

I cant speak for anyone elses experience with them, but when I tried them they sounded pretty good, however a month and a half later blew and took a fair amount of fuses and stuff with it....
