Aph-1 vs Seth neck humbucker

Hi! I've lurked here for quite a while, but this is the first time posting.

Looked at a fair bit of posts here concerning my question, but I'd like to be a bit more specific on just these two pickups. My LP is a faded standard and being chambered is very resonant and acoustically lively. It originally had BB pros in which I found the bridge to be too harsh and was replaced with a Seth. However, I left the neck in there and I now find it pretty boomy, without clarity and pretty overpowering as compared to the bridge (which I really like).

It's time to replace the BB Pro neck, I'm down to the Seth or Aph-1 neck pickup. Either one will be open coils (zebra) but I'm having a hard time figuring out which to get. I play blues and classic rock (I know, a little too general a style description), both clean, with mild overdrive (sometime some fuzz on the neck). I'd like a smooth neck sound that has some clarity, without clanky highs when I play with a pick... one that sounds good playing blues or jazzy blues without having to drop the tone knob to 4. I don't like necks that sound too "edgy", I feel like that's a bridge thing for me. Clear and smooth all the way for the neck...

I'm so sensitive to piercing highs that I generally set my amp to make the bridge Seth sound great... I know it's the opposite of some rec's here, but it really works for me. So the neck pickup is at a disadvantage for clarity.

What's your feeling about these two pickups in the neck? Greatly appreciate your opinions here!!

The Seth definitely is a glassier and more chimey sounding pickup with more clarity, while the AIIpro has much smoother, sweeter and more rounded highs

The AIIpro is available in a variety of open coil configurations such as zebra and reverse zebra. The Seth is only sold with nickel or gold cover by default, but can be special ordered uncovered as a shop floor custom order through any authorized SD dealer

Considering your amp settings are already dialed in for a Lover in the bridge I think the clarity of the seth in the neck will allow for a fatter sweeter tone in the neck, whereas as the natural sweetness of the AIIpro might end up sounding a bit too dark with those amp settings and it may be a case of too much of a good thing

Very interesting point! Thank you (both) for your help... Considering how boomy, the BB Pro is now, I think what you say makes sense. If no one else can make as compelling an "argument" for the APH-1, I think I will go Seth neck.

Thanks again!

The biggest difference is that one is wax potted and the other isn't. Id you use a lot of gain, the APH-1N is probably a better choice, and it's cheaper.

I bought a zebra Seth neck. I will report back how it all worked out.

Thanks for the help!

With a SethB, that obviously isn't an issue for him. Both are great PU's, two of my favorites, and being unpotted actually gives a SethN an advantage for the benefits to the sound. Glad to see that's what the OP went with, although either one is an excellent choice.

Hi!

Just wanted to check in again after the Seth Lover neck pickup was installed in my Les Paul. I'm loving the pickup and I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who gave their advice on this. Of course, I can't compare how the APH-1 would be different, but the Seth is giving me everything I was hoping for... Smoothness with clarity, and it never seems to get boomy. It's a very nice match for the chimey openness of the chambered LP. Thanks to everyone once again!
