APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

Have not reat the whole thread but my experience - I LOVED the Slashers in my Epi 335 Pro which needed something to tame the harsh natural edge of the faux maple and cheap bridge. The bridge Slash sounded horrible in my 2013 335S, and the pair was a big meh in both my 2014 classic and my 2014 traditional. Couldn't rip em out fast enough.

I'm pleased with regular A2P's, and have felt no need to get the Slash set. I certainly don't want a hotter neck PU. Maybe a Slash bridge with an A2P neck.

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

Output wasn't an issue, and I prefer lower output pups. They just sound bigger than regular a2ps. Not really hotter. The neck was very clear. The problem was they were bland and despite the output, very unballsy for crunchy chords. I can see them working for someone with an extreme high midrange amp, pedal, and speaker setup like slash....joobies, v30s, and a wah. But they are not for me.

One of the biggest reasons I use A2P's instead of the Slash set is because the Slash set is not available with 4 conductor wire.

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

My 59 sets and JB 35th Anniversary came single conductor and my hot rodded set is 4 conductor. I really only care when a Les Paul is true 50s wired because otherwise makes no difference. I don't coil tap.

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

One thing I noticed is the OP has a Hong Kongy bridge. If he thinks that is modern spacing it would only be on epiphones.

agreed. I prefered the Slash bridge over the regular A2P and I do like the regular A2P neck pickup

BUT

I love the A2Pneck/59B hybrid. Best. Neck. Pickup. Ever.

I use 4 conductor on every humbucker I currently use, specifically for coil splits. To each their own though.

I would like to try one of these hybrids you speak of

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

According to Stew Mac an ABR-1 has 51.99mm string spacing, while the current Nashville TOM has 51.56mm spacing which comes out to less than 1/4 mm per side, not even noticeable.

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

i prefer the poles to be centered under the strings because of the strings relationship to the poles magnetic field.
If you were talking about the NECK p'up, I could understand. But, in the bridge position, where strings almost don't move, there's no technical reason whatsoever for you to think that.

This comes from a lack of understanding of the very basics of how a magnetic p'up REALLY works. But I think the deciding factor is the "bragging rights", mixed with a bit of OCD and obsession with looks.

i already have a set of chrome covered epi pups in it that actually sound really good that are installed on it now
If you REALLY think so, then the rest figurs...

Guitarfetish.com would gladly take your order.

HTH,

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

How does this all translate when it comes to trembuckers?

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

I meant more so in realtion to whether the pole placement has a big enough effect to be of concern. Since posting that though, I'm guessing it's a volume thing(?)

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

If the guitar was built from scratch they/you shoulda used another bridge in the first place...

Re: APH-2s no good for "modern" les pauls

i like 4 conductors to wire series/parallel switch, but that's only because i prefer one pickup guitars (bridge only) and scorching pickups (metal guitarist) so i can get nicer cleans

I had a trembucker JB in a 2012 Les Paul custom classic. It was a little wide but not enough to matter.
